I’m just finding out about this. Has he been the head coach for a while?
Beutjer took over when Hartman stepped down in 2020. Long time assistant on the staff so wasn't getting acclimated to anything new with the program. Probably went under the radar because happened during Covid and no Fall games

numbers guys: how many open rides left?

assuming 2 after the SIU safety. 1 OL and 1 WR?
HMMM what about the DL Laine Jenkins, I think he currently is committed to OU. However, Werner gave us a crystal ball pick for him the other day?

I'm guessing the remaining rides are Ley + Jenkins + current walk-on (unless one of these WRs visiting this week are coming in as '23).

Edit - Forgot about SIU safety reducing the available scholarships to 2.

I know their is an issue with how many scholarships we have remaining..... Hear me out though, does it really matter with NIL money whether they are on scholarships or not?? Cant we make them a walk-on and pay them enough NIL to cover it? Legit random thought I had and I know scholarship players get more benefits but if the player was right and you were out of scholarships would that work to just pay them NIL and be a "Walkon".... Just curious what anyone thinks?

I’ve wondered the same thing.

Did prince green leave to get to 3 remaining? Or after? I don’t remember.
Was thinking with the safety addition maybe someone is planning to leave? At this point must be a grad transfer (not sure of any cb/saf) or medical issue. But idk

Lots of worries/unknowns about trying something this route. A few examples:

- Certain food availability/nutrition is only available for scholarship players. Not an ideal disadvantage.
- Different taxes when it comes to getting compensation for services provided and scholarships.
- Biggest unknown is governmental oversight through Title IX. NIL has "skirted" by T9 because it's viewed as separate from participation. If schools start working in concert with NIL by pulling scholarship and simultaneously the player receiving an increased NIL payment, you might be facing a federal lawsuit. It's never been tested before, so it's legally unknown, but I'm sure university legal counsel across the country wouldn't feel great about those potential challenges.

Why would a player of a certain NIL value use that value to pay tuition when they could go somewhere and get a scholarship to pay their tuition and pocket their NIL?

Pretty sure the coaching staff knows how many scholarships we have available right now and in the near future. Think we are just getting the itch for the season to start already.....

It would depend on who we are recruiting but can always bring in another body on blueshirt

Correct but I was more wondering if it could be done or if anyone has tried it.... I'm aware the staff knows how many scholarships they have but I'm more thinking if we were to be full when camp started or around then and someone came available that is at a position of need and it was basically our only choice of adding them kind of deal. Was also looking at this as a possible hoops strategy as well. Kind of a loop hole is what I'm thinking and would not be something to use often just thought giving kids money to play is about the same as a scholarship if they are talented enough your paying either way....

I believe Texas tech was trying to do it for 25 walkons

I think byu has it for the whole team including walkons.

Are we still looking at the wide receiver from UTSA?

I'm usually not that poster who doesn't just read through the damn pages, but I honestly am just kind of not very knowledgeable about football recruiting the way I am about basketball. So, would a poster mind giving his/her take on kind of "where we stand" as far as the Bielema Era goes for recruiting? I know we are nowhere close to getting back to the early Zook days, but I also get the impression that (1) the early outreach efforts (especially instate) from Bret and the staff have been a breath of fresh air compared to Lovey, (2) we are getting some encouraging "leads" on recruits that (if they commit) would really be a huge step forward for the program and (3) we all seem a bit more comfortable with the idea of finding under-the-radar guys and developing them with solid, proven coaching.

Living in Chicago, I have seen a very serious uptick in Illini gear around the city from 2020 to 2021 to 2022, exponetionally increasing each year. This is GREAT to see, as the atmosphere out at the bars on a college football Saturday in Chicago really can't be beat IMO, and Illinois' futility always held back the turnout of Illini fans ... and I am ecstatic to see that start to change! However, it would be a real shame if we cannot cash in some of this momentum and positive rebranding of the program with some substantial recruiting wins.

Again, apologies for the novice request ... lol, at the end of the day, it just stems from truly renewed excitement and optimism in the program and my desire to get excited further.
I've worked in a large suburban high school district for the last 20 years. Always been annoyed at how much more Wisconsin/Iowa/Missouri (!) gear I've seen compared to Illinois. Big increase in Illini gear this year. Quite a ways to go yet, but a very satisfying trend.

#1 is no longer true
#2 gross it up. Happens all the time in the corporate world
#3 You can't compete scared like the Guenther regime did. At this point Illinois appears to have good separation between the University and NIL.

I dont see the big need at wr, shawn miller was a great commitment coming in last yr and was inj, pugh was another solid commit and beatty play as a true freshman. Add those 3 to I.Will and P.Bryant and a capable Washington. Now add a speedster in Wilcher and stud Elzy shows me plenty of depth at wr. But I’m also the same guy that believes rb combo of McCray and Love replace Browns 1600+ yards a season ago. Can’t wait for the season!!!

They would have to cover the NIL value plus the tuition. So maybe an extra 30k/year depending on the school? Seems like a lot of increment expense, especially for 25 walkons like BYU, but if you want to win bad enough and have the money 🤷
