Immediate playing time.

You go to OSU, Bama or Georgia you are small fish in big pond. At C-U you are a whale. Look at how much press Chase Brown and Weatherspoon got at Illinois!
I don’t think kids of their caliber are all that concerned with press. Press is not what got Spoon drafted #5. The press came because he was good enough to get drafted fifth. All that press Chase got didn’t elevate him beyond the 5th round (or get him there). Now if you want to talk about NIL, the big fish, small pond might hold water. But I don’t know if Illini’s NIL offer would be equal to let alone larger than say Ohio State’s.

It’s all about getting to the NFL followed by team success. If Illini can convince them that Illinois/Bullen can maximize their NFL potential, they have a shot. I’m not even sure if immediate playing time is as important as some think though it probably doesn’t hurt. Going up against the best in practice and then potentially on a big stage might be more beneficial to their long-term development. I think Pick 5 with less playing time freshman year would trump pick 21 and starting as a freshman.

As someone said, Illini seems to be on the trajectory of getting a player(s) of this level. While I wouldn’t bet on that time being now with these two, we’ll just have to wait and see.

You only live once.

You were BMOC in HS.

Come to Illinois - immediate playing time, on TV, featured player. BMOC Get great NFL prep.

Go to OSU Bama and sit on bench with 40 other 4/5 star recruits.

Gotta play to be seen. Gotta play to improve. People remember Sidney Brown's 2 interceptions one for TD and fumble return for TD. It made ESPN.

Is Konkel the highest ranked TE commit since Jon Davis?

Reaction on Wisconsin forum Tapatalk after Illinois flipped Woodward away from the Badgers:

Ugh. Didn't realize the D staff at Illinois is:
Aaron Henry - DC
Terrence Jamison - DLine
Andy Buh - LBs
Antonio Fenelus - DBs
Charlie Bullen - OLBs
along with Bart Miller - OLine

Well I hope the foundation for BB and company’s pitch isn’t come to Illinois and become a BMOC. Recruits at this level aren’t concerned about being a BMOC. They want to be big men in NFL.

As for sitting on the bench with 40 other 4/5 recruits, kids of this caliber likely aren’t worried about competition for playing time either. And there aren’t 40 at their position — and all 4 stars aren’t created equal. These are high 4 stars, top 100 players in the class. They plan to work their butts off and start. And if they do, they will likely play plenty freshman year if not start. And freshmen do start at those schools or see plenty of time.

But you got me in the ESPN highlights. Can’t remember seeing highlights of any Ohio State or Alabama players before on ESPN. And who do you think remembers the Sidney Brown’s game? Illinois fans? Of course. NW fans? Probably. NFL scouts? Sure but they’d know about it without ESPN and that was just a piece of why he got drafted. The average sports fan? Maybe 5%. And Brown was a senior not a freshman who got immediate playing time when he did it.

Yes, Illinois has good selling points. I hope one or both of them comes. But if they do it is not going to be because they’ll be on TV and their highlights might be on ESPN. Immediate playing time certainly doesn’t hurt, but like I said players of this caliber likely aren’t looking for the path of least resistance when it comes to playing time. They expect to start/see playing time very early. It will be because they believe in Charlie, Bret and the plan Illinois has to get them in the NFL. Not because they’ll be a BMOC.

I would think if nil$ are close. With the coaches we have on staff, young men are coming! Get coached up and prepared to play on Sunday sales itself.
