Dennis: thought we were going to land him (he liked us a lot, multiple visits), but then MSU stepped on the gas and snagged him. Really like this kid, think he'll be a starter down the line. Needless to say, hope we can flip him.

Well said. I still like Carroll more but Dennis falls into the “take them and figure out the scholarships later” category.

I wonder if one of these two TEs will end up at OL, DL, or OLB.
I’d really like to see us get some of that TE to OT development. Our lack of athleticism on the line shows this year. I always like moving a HS player “down” a position in terms of athletic demands unless he’s just a straight dude.

For example, TE to OT, OT to guard, safety to LB etc.

I wholeheartedly agree with this
we will most definitely get a second bite at the apple with some of the guys we lost out to the first time around.
Its a new world in recruiting. a player get one free transfer his first 4 years an another after his 4th.
Yep. Guys who get that high level look can take that chance to earn a spot, get a year in a top level program and can always come home if they don't find the role they're looking for.

This is a really interesting nugget. Could be a tease about Illinois becoming more involved in the portal this offseason (and going forward). Could also mean they have had some players take their temperature if they consider leaving their current institution.
I wonder who would fit this?
It’s basically 2 recruiting classes plus the 2024 class.
Maybe the two DL, Cook and I forget. Transition in coaches for Wisc, NW, Neb (less so pu) may lead to formation/ position expectation changes. Just my guess.

in theory , we are not allowed any official contact with the player until and unless he enters the portal , correct ?

of course the player could always have a friend of family member reach out and gauge interest from our side . but we can’t be calling or texting or emailing these guys directly , correct ?

I don't think Bielema's take is unique. Every coach looks at some players they lose and think they've made a decision that won't work out because of competition. In the past the players were stuck. Now they're not.

A few teams are looking at Trey Petty that way.

Have a feeling that it is Northwestern, Michigan State, and maybe Minnesota that iare the first targets, but always expect mystery candidates.

Deylen Platt, '24 DB, committed to USF yesterday. This summer it appeared to be a ILL/Ole Miss battle, but USF swoops in with a late offer and snags him.
It seems all of our known main targets are now committed somewhere, so any further '24 class additions will be late-bloomer offers or flips.

I watched the press conference. He basically said they want all the Illinois, Midwest and Florida kids in traditional recruiting. Then they can grab the Illinois guys out of the portal who they might have missed on, and the guys they hadn’t identified out of high school because they weren’t in those 3 main areas, like Nicario Harper from Atlanta.

Personally I’d like to see us get more into Texas, but that doesn’t seem to be a focus. Being down here for over a decade now 😱, I’ve flipped my opinion to that the best athletes in the country are actually here, and not in Florida. Houston, Dallas, and the small country towns in East Texas just have different types of dudes in ridiculously large quantities. So much so that it really doesn’t make sense.
