Even out the door, Shawn Miller's mom has positive things to say about the staff.

Any quality WR transfers on our radar?

I'd think that retaining Williams, Bryant, and Elzy are the largest blips on the WR radar. Elzy already confirmed he's staying.

I will be excited about those three topping the WR depth chart, with the transfer JUCO receiver on board as well. Other receivers we've considered good recruiting gets like Kenari Wilcher and Collin Dixon--and probably others I am neglecting--are still in the WR room and could step up to play more snaps next year.

With other positional needs (OL, DL) taking precedence, I presume that unless the staff has the impression Williams or Bryant will bolt, they will not be particularly focused on WRs from the portal. Maybe if a freebee comes along. Or if Clemson transfer cornerback, former national recruit overall rank #40 from East Saint Louis, were to say he wanted to play both offense and defense--WR/CB--for his home state Illini, we probably should sign him and give him the chance to compete at both positions, right? 😋

Outbid others ? Yes …

Outbid the “elites” … No …

Our NIL efforts are right around 80-90% focused on roster retention …

It seems it is heavily skewed towards the "elite".

Have we created a caste system?

Huge respect for Coach.

Don't forget Hollins made an impact pretty much every time he saw the field. Beatty will also have a role. If IW leaves they may try to bring in somebody with more experience, but I doubt it would be a top priority and wouldn't imagine it would be a huge-NIL type of kid.

We have 85 kids on scholarship. But B1G rule limits teams to only taking 74 players on travel rosters to away games.

Our travel rosters this year included some walk-ons (ex: Paddock). So, there were a modest number of scholarship players who were NOT named to travel rosters for any games this year. I believe less than a dozen, but don’t have the exact count.

I am told that most (maybe all) of those students have been counseled by the coaches that they probably won’t see the field next season either, the implication being that they should consider the portal. Some may stay because they want the UIUC education, and the scholarship is guaranteed (I know of one kid specifically).

This is one difficult side of big time football.
