It’d be cool to see us pursue Kris Hutson and Bryan Addison from Oregon. Bryan was one of their top DBs and is a 6’5 safety. He was away from the team for personal reasons, so we’d have to do our due diligence, but his physical profile and experience are attractive to me given our desperate need for capable DBs.

Being completely serious … We can’t afford any QB on that list and none of them would even want to come here …

Luke is our guy … Bret is looking to add a backup QB …

Leary really came on strong towards end of the year … I’d guess he is QB2 but they’re gonna bring in some competition …
It'll obviously be Altmyer but yes. If you see the waters we are traveling in for our positions of need (mostly JUCOs), we just don't have the NIL $ for a top guy at any position. Unrealistic to expect us to get a top QB and especially one that is an upgrade of Altmyer who has two years of eligibility left and already spent a year in our system.

I don't know the Nicholson off-the-field issues but that's a serious hit. A lot of experience and he's had good performances in the past within a unit that stunk last year.

Is it though …

He made some big plays but also seemed to commit the most stupid penalties of any player on the team. Just could not stay under control. If he thinks he will be better off somewhere else good for him. A lot of coaches would park him on the bench for the penalties. Brett kept rolling him out there.

We have like 2 good-ish seasons in the 21st century. Altmyer is about as good as you'll get until you get good.
The money has moved from under the table to over the table. The relative differences between schools / boosters that will spend a lot and those that won't has not changed. We had a a short-term bump because we got organized more quickly than others when NIL started, but on a pure money basis, in the long term, I don't think much has changed.

Until we start winning consistently and get good, agreed. And Bret is our best chance for that.

ETA: saw you added some specifics in a more recent post. But simply saying "penalties were a problem" seems to be putting it extremely diplomatically.

Because penalties are often more noise than signal. Nicholson had 2.5 seasons of starting snaps and didn't have a penalty issue before, even when he was targeted more frequently last year when he was the weakest secondary starter.

The off field stuff wasn’t worth those stats … Believe me …

Can't speak to this and can understand it could make this a required separation.

er, you've omitted our ascendent status as a P2 member. now, obviously not all members are equal. but our status, relative to non-P2 schools, is considerably better than it was a short time ago. and that gap is only gonna widen

I'm repeating my own words from a couple months ago, but there will be 34 schools in the P2 all ascending with the same money. Right now we're around #30 in that group. Not sure that gap matters so much when we have miles to go just to be good in conference, let alone nationally.

I'm also in that camp that thinks money will turn that P2 into a P1 sometime down the road, and Illinois will not be part of that P1. Except as non-conference punching bags.

Personal opinion or do you facts that you are basing this claim on?

but he also led all FBS defenders with 11 penalties...
Witherspoon had penalty issues too, and some considered him a hotdog. But in his case, talent and competitiveness were surely enough to compensate for a few personal fouls and PIs. The coaches recognized that Spoon's swagger was integral to his success.

It’ll happen, and unless something changes, we’ll be on the outside looking in. Hopefully something changes soon, we’re trending in the right direction.
