Unfortunately, they have a coach that is an aggressive recruiter, local businesses willing to help, excitement around in-state recruiting, and an administration committed to winning. And, they've done a great job leveraging 1 nice year of success. I am envious, which sucks. We should back out of that head-to-head upcoming series as we will be at a significant talent deficit
So do we. But instead of fearing stronger competition - embrace it and up your game. We can do this. Josh and Bret understand what it takes and with their savvy and in time, we’ll be knocking down 4 star running backs as well.

Anyone, anywhere, and at anytime we are ready to go and if we aren't we should fire everyone. I'm tired of people thinking Illinois needs to be scared of another team. We play a style of football we should be in most games and if you're in most games you can win most games.

Not to derail the recruiting thread, but as a program, we did take that non-conference approach before:

So if you had to put a number on transfer portal additions per position, what would it be?
+3 offensive linemen
+4 defensive linemen (added 2 so far)
+2 secondary
+1 OLB
Wouldn’t think a qb or wr is a position of need. Injuries hindered the rb room last yr and I don’t see them adding anyone in the portal to be behind feagin, mccray, anderson, laughery and valentine. Just my $.02, curious what others think.

Agree with these, but we should also probably add at least one TE also.

QB = Promote Leary to backup, bring in QB from a lower level (FCS/D2)
RB = Probably nothing if room can stay healthy
WR = Bring somebody in for more depth, becomes a big ? if Isaiah goes pro
TE = Take anyone with a pulse and body temp roughly in the 90's
OL = 1 Tackle for sure (I don't have a good read here), 2 tackles + 1 IOL to compete would be ideal
DL = 1 more (?)
EDGE = 1 more, 2 would be nice if Coleman goes to the draft
LB = I really liked the film of Easton Baker as did a lot of people, so probably not (?)
DB = Looks like we have 2 that are heavily rumored for us, a backup STAR would be great

As long as staff continues to stack starter quality talent, I am happy. Last offseason was really weird as I couldn’t discern if it was overconfidence or complacency amongst our staff regarding our roster. Regardless, today was a good day for Illinois football.
