I would say being 55th now is like being 75th (average AAC level) in recruiting. The "does it matter?" is going to be more aligned with being 20th-40th in recruiting because all of those schools will not be competing for national championships and very unlikely to be competing for conference championships. A couple schools in that area will be good because they got the absolute max ceiling from a handful of recruits ('22 TCU, '15 MSU) but the remaining will be hoping to squeeze out 8 wins and hoping the bowl system will still support everything as currently devised.
We don't share some opinion which is fine.

We aren't close to National Championship material. Working on being a continual Bowl game contender and. 500 and above. I would love to see a NC before my time is up.(In my 40s)

There are transition years from one coach to another. I don't count 2016 against Lovie or 2021 against BB.

Lovie Smith composite national recruiting rankings

2017: 46
2018: 54
2019: 56
2020: 82

Lovie fired and BB brought in mid-December of 2020
2021: 73

BB composite national recruiting rankings

2022: 46
2023: 38
2024: 49
2025: Way too early but at 46

Narrative can be spun any direction. BB is doing just fine bringing in recruits. All these rankings are good for the moment(more so for fans) but few guys transfer in/out and they get skewed quickly. I don't worry about incoming transfers being from IL either.
Well 46-49 needs to be the floor. It would be nice to be in the top 25 once in a while. I think that's what it's going to take for us to be a top 25 ranked program year in and out.

No doubt

Also need to remember BB is a 20s-40s type recruiter over his career. He could get 20-30s at Arkansas because he was in SEC. The whole we need this certain class needs to factor in transfer portal ranking as well. One won't cut it

That's a bummer, guessing Smith was looking at competing for a lot of snaps in 2025.

I'm not basing this off one transfer, but put me in the @ChiefGritty camp of this - portal world - being the death of major college athletics (I'm pretty sure that's been his viewpoint, apologies if I have that wrong).

There needs to be some absolutely massive changes put in place, like yesterday, because this isn't sustainable.

I speculate that anyone leaving immediately after the spring game has been "encouraged" to do so by the coaching staff. BB did say that he's conducting 1:1's over the next week or so.

Do we have a list of of any transfers we are going after? I haven't seen anything yet. Plenty of players leaving and we need to start adding.

The solution is simple - classify the athletes as employees and you can collectively bargain with them to gain certain employee controls, like player movement.

The implementation is complex, as several coaches, administrators, and other stakeholders are enriching themselves based on the current system. Until that system is economically stressed to the point those benefits are at-risk, we will continue walking towards the abyss.

IMO the players will NEVER gain the status of Employees..... That just opens too many cans of worms for the Schools/NCAA/etc.. to deal with.... at best a short term losing proposition at worst LONGGG term losing... BEST outcome is for the players to organize some sort of student/player/individual union. Give them ('The Union') negotiating Carte Blanche and hope for the best. Keeps the schools outside of the Employer/Employee position, and at the very least stalls things for some time to figure out where this is all headed...

This can't be all NIL related. A lot of these guys are in line to compete for starter status or at least a ton of snaps.
I've always hated the Henry DC move and my conspiratorial brain is thinking these guys can sense what's coming with his bad this defense is about to be and they and wait to get out of dodge.
Feel free to tell me I'm overreacting but there are bad, bad vibes on the north side of Kirby right now.
