With Bret saying recently that there are “3 or 4 guys in this signing class who are day-one starters,” I’m curious how everyone here interprets that.

Do you think this is:

(a) A strategic message aimed at keeping our current verbals locked in through signing day, basically reassuring them they have an early path to the field so we don’t lose them to late poaching attempts from other programs?

(b) A genuine reflection that we really do have 3–4 guys who are that good and physically/mentally ready to play B1G football from day one?

Or maybe a mix of both?

Not trying to be cynical, just trying to understand how much of this is recruiting gamesmanship vs. true evaluation. Curious to hear the board’s thoughts.

Mix of both, but I would also add this is messaging also targeted at the top recruits that are committed to other programs that Illinois is still after, "come to Illinois and you can be a day-one starter unlike your current committed school".

Think we get a last minute flip?

I like our chances with JC... solely based on his family not loving Lane's spectacle...
If I remember correctly Colorado was ruled out for similar messaging.

I did not realize they made him the permanent coach. Wow. Big risk going forward. That usually fails miserably instead of a national search.
Honestly, don't know that Ole Miss has much of a choice. They need stability and continuity for the Playoff, this round of coaching carousel is absolutely bananas with the hot candidates that aren't the coach that just left you mostly staying put or already locked in at their new school. Probably makes the most sense to hire as permanent coach make the best run you can, develop and evaluate your short list next year, and make a move next offseason if you need to.

Don't think they had much of a choice. If they don't do that they probably are losing most of their coaching staff on both sides of the ball going into the playoff. As a program that's not going to make the playoff on a regular basis, priority #1 (and also #2-10 tbh) has to be making the most out of this current opportunity.

Marsh, Dixon, Clement could be the best WR room in the B10 (other than OSU perhaps). Likely would demand a ton of $$ however.
