I never had a problem with NIL. I think players should make money, but NIL with unlimited transfers was a recipe for disaster.

Probably can’t be reversed and is an oversimplification, but I think keeping NIL but only allowing a player to transfer without sitting out would help.

The would require a CBA. In that direction, a CBA would almost certainly include multi year contracts.

don't like being big-footed by a whale, but at least it's a specialist. they weren't able to pry away any key guys last year, despite repeated forays. so, that's another sign of progress. we should be able to find a good kicker (to be clear, not Olano good) with the money budgeted for Olano.

WRT Rusk, believe he saw less snaps as the season unfolded. couldn't break out of the rotation mold and regressed, if anything. disappointing he's leaving, but understandable

My opinion on this one is strictly my opinion …

But if it was me … A change would be made …

Going to need a new Kicker … TE room is not great … And missed on Sutter and Anderson … Which hey maybe we would have anyways but for both of them to say the relationship wasn’t that great with Discher … That’s an unacceptable answer for me …

But like I said … Strictly my opinion that a change should be made …
If this is true, he should already be gone!

We’ll see who else leaves, but it’s pretty meh overall. Olano is good, but we don’t need to shell out a bunch of cash for a kicker. Rusk and Patterson both regressed + were injured. I don’t really think anyone leaving would be a huge blow. I could see the RB room taking a bit of a hit as well honestly, a lot of mouths to feed there. Portal opens up a lot in terms of replacing guys. Great class coming in as well.

I don’t understand why it’s taking so long to get there but with NIL and the portal we simply have to go all in with contracts and salary caps. If athletes are getting big money then the commitment has to go both ways including playing in bowl games. It’s a business right? Do you pay someone big money but give them the option to pick and choose when to perform? Why should we develop a player and have to financially compete to keep him each year. Sign a two year deal and we commit to you and you commit to us - just like the NFL. ITS THAT SIMPLE

The portal has giveth to us huge in basketball and football and taketh from us huge. Bret has done a great job with his overall convincing many to stay for a “little less money” for the good of their careers. We do a great job of this in basketball. There are at least 8 transfers from Illinois doing pretty well at their next schools but lllini still doing great on the court. It’s just plug and play. Next. There will be another David Olano out there.

To the person who said he was offered $750K. If that's true, lmao. Would put him just below NFL rookie minimum.
I’ve posted this before, but if Olano wins us just one game we wouldn’t have won, there is $$ value to the difference between 5-7 or 6-6 and 9-3 or 10-2 (and everywhere in between). I just keep watching kickers on CFP teams missing kicks that Olano would make. I fear we are undervaluing the position.

Can any of the insiders or just people that have a better understanding of the roster help me understand what is going on at TE? Cole is clearly one of our best 1-2 TEs and while we landed the Vala, TE recruit that everyone seems to agree is underranked and has a ton of potential, we ultimately struck out on the 2 4 star TE in state prospects. Is our TE coach bad? Is this a scheme thing with how Lunney uses TEs in the offense? Or is there some other sort of explanation re: why can't we get/retain good TEs? Or am I simply overreacting and we are at where we should be at for a program of our caliber?
Agreed.

I'm in the Loren Tate camp here, too. Tight-ends in an offense like ours and with a QB like Luke should be averaging 4-6 catches a game (50 minimum per year).

Agreed. It is a job at this point. Having multi-year contracts would cut down on the portal. Opt out clause if head coach leaves and I think there needs to be more stringent mechanisms in place to reduce the coaching carousel as well.

Seeing him attempt to pick up blocks in the backfield, I dont think i want to see him at TE either. For being 255lbs, he plays like he's 150
