The portal has giveth to us huge in basketball and football and taketh from us huge. Bret has done a great job with his overall convincing many to stay for a “little less money” for the good of their careers. We do a great job of this in basketball. There are at least 8 transfers from Illinois doing pretty well at their next schools but lllini still doing great on the court. It’s just plug and play. Next. There will be another David Olano out there.
If you’re watching the CFP and the other bowls, are you sure about that?

I don’t understand why it’s taking so long to get there but with NIL and the portal we simply have to go all in with contracts and salary caps. If athletes are getting big money then the commitment has to go both ways including playing in bowl games. It’s a business right? Do you pay someone big money but give them the option to pick and choose when to perform? Why should we develop a player and have to financially compete to keep him each year. Sign a two year deal and we commit to you and you commit to us - just like the NFL. ITS THAT SIMPLE
I enjoy free agency in the NFL, but it's very structured. We know who's contracts are up, we know how much cap room each team has. A fan can make reasonable guesses of who their team can and will go for. You can get your own wish list.

In college, it's a sh!tshow. No clue who will leave or stay. No idea how much someone is willing to pay for your guy. It is about the worst system possible.

I loved when the announcers questioned how Texas Tech turned around so quickly. It's simple, they spent more money than 95% of other programs.

I would not say Arkin or Rusk blocked well enough either but they could catch a pass. I was just asking a simple question.
I was just giving an honest answer to your question. Playing TE well takes a lot of talent and a lot of ability to block. Feagin doesn’t have that ability. I’d think even Vala can play TE better than Feagin.

I would prefer they go the other way--no restrictions on compensation, but restrictions on eligibility. I wish they would lean in on the student part of student athlete. I know there is a large helping of cynicism around that view, but that is what makes the sport so engaging. That would limit transfer to one for undergrad with no sit out and allow for a transfer after earning a degree. The NCAA is an association of universities after all.

I have been a fan of NIL and kids getting to transfer, I don't think it's been implemented the best way. I like the idea of salary caps, but doesn't that kinda kill the NIL moniker? As far as transfers go. Limit it to something like, everyone gets one free transfer. This can be used at any point for any reason, but you only get one. Then grad transfer, and special cases like coaching change, family issues, etc. Get rid of trying to tansfer every year to chase the bag.

Serious question. You are ok with an MLB situation where one or two schools pay $100M and the average top 40 team pays $15M-$20M? That is what will happen.

With Thad leaving I’d be more concerned about Valentine leaving. Not saying it’ll happen but he was close with Thad

I wonder if this program would be better without the NIL and Portal era with Bret as the coach- doubt Olano would’ve left pre- Nil
