And I’ve acknowledged that you do have to take some smaller school guys because they are cheaper. However, which P4 dude do we know that is currently visiting?
My point is we’ve seem to prioritize a bunch of smaller school guys right off the bat. Which is the opposite of the strategy I think we should be taking. Get your horses first, and then see what kind of money you have left over to land your fliers.

if you lose out on your horses, you're gonna be gleaning for scraps (because a lot of lower tier guys will be off the board). best to have a balanced approach. ID your top targets, regardless of tier, well in advance and shoot your shot. ID staff has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt
I think you can take that approach but it’s a risk adverse one. It’s safe to play for the second and third tier guys. But then you get second and third tier results. This staff has earned the benefit of the doubt for sure… they’ve done well. But more so in the development area. I would argue they have not really hit on a juco commit in like 3 recruiting classes (Patterson was meh). Transfer juco guys they’ve had some success. And they’ve had some decent success with the smaller school guys for sure.
However, it feels like sometimes we get sorta cute. Not saying the sky is falling. But I simply don’t see how recruiting a bad offensive lineman from lower levels for depth purposes moves the needle at all.

Let's just get a bunch of nasty lineman, hold the pocket and open up holes big enough for semis to drive through. Spend the bags on the best hogs out there and every other position will look way better. Outside of elite RB and QB and upper level D1 RB and QB are dime a dozen. Sell them on protection and holes.

but G5 is full of really good players . the NFL has LOTS of thrm on every teams roster . they are there
but I tend to agree overall , thsts it’s more likely the better results will come from P4 players who get stuck behind studs & playing time is just too tough so they bail . see Altmeyer, Luke

am not suggesting that we shouldn't pursue select big dogs. we absolutely should. but at the same time we should be actively pursuing guys at or near the top of our board who happen to play in a lower tier.
one more thought on big dogs: gotta accurately assess that we have a legit shot. don't waste recruiting capital on guys who are unlikely gets

Credit to the staff on getting in on Houser early and hopefully we can close the deal. He’s the right tier of QB with a lot of experience to come in and win next year. We’re not going to win the bidding wars for the top QB’s - although Arkansas sounds like they are prioritizing him too and only have one other QB on the roster. It only takes one other bidder to create a bidding war and hopefully it doesn’t come down to that

An Illinois mention.
I think giving a scholarship to a guy who wasn’t even good at the lower level… for depth purposes… right off the bat.. is in fact wasting recruiting capital. Especially in a season where we desperately need to overhaul an entire roster. Is landing a potential back up guard really worth it this early?
I totally trust the staff. But sometimes I think we get overconfident in our development. I’d argue not landing portal DBs and LBs killed us the two seasons more than anything else.
We have like 20 guys transferring out of the program. I don’t think they are banking on player development anymore

I also assume some of this turnover is based on the availability of resources ($) to build the roster. It seems as though we’re in better shape than in years past - let’s hope it’s enough of a leap to move us ahead of where we’re at, and not just keep us even.

That OL from Colorado state or whatever. That move does absolutely nothing. 55 PFF grade in a bad conference… yet we want him? It’s concerning to me. But hey, I’ve been wrong before lol
unfortunately according to my excel sheet (very official I know) lol. We don’t have nearly that many spots open. I think we have anywhere from 10-12 spots as we sit right now. 105 being the limit. Given that 2 of those spots have to go to a QB and K. We are realistically looking at 10 guys ish for both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. (Unless more transfer which I’m sure will happen).
So it feels like we are counting on a lot of development to replace all the 2 deeps guys we lost.
Illinois once again dumpster diving in the portal. If we aren’t going to be serious with the football program just give all the NIL to hoops, at least they try and put together a contender
