Unfortunately the rumor is that Illinois is undervaluing players on the roster right now. McCullom supposedly had an offer on the table from Illinois for half of what another team offered.
Maybe and I'm only speculating here, if you have a player that you don't necessarily want to keep, but you might keep him at a discount for depth, you offer him a lot less money.

Edge rusher Keyshawn Johnson commits to Syracuse. That was one of the top guys i wanted.

I think we're saying something similar. There are plenty of good depth pieces to get from smaller schools, and they are hard to identify. The top group in the portal isn't hard to identify though as they've been successful players at this level already. We seem to be allocating our resources to prep recruiting (as evidenced by our best class in....forever?), which is perfectly fine. Now, ideally those kids stick around, at least the good ones

It’s not just depth pieces. Indiana still starts 6 players from James Madison and 3 of them are all Americans. Miami also starts a lot of guys that played at the g5 level at one point

That argument would hold water if every single defensive returner didn’t enter the portal. The staff clearly doesn’t have a good indicator of the market right now.

Portal is a useful tool for marking a value (mark to market) of a player’s skill set.

I like the players we have picked up. We have added size, speed and athleticism which we needed. Our OL will be better, our receiving core is very deep. On defense, we have added speed. I trust Bret on finding the right fit for what we need.

100% agree. I trust BB until he gives me a reason not to. Obviously we have some holes to fill on defense but the portal season still isn’t over. We’ve added solid depth. Also everyone should listen for the Josh Whitman interview with Jeremy Werner. They address NIL and Whitman says how we are conservative with nil offers while other schools are offering nil packages that might not clear the clearinghouse. I’ve said it before but I know for a fact that the 2 Chicago players on Miami didn’t get all the money they were promised last year. Same thing has happened with certain programs in college basketball

For the oline we added the top 2 juco linemen. 7th year senior in Renfro. Martin is a lottery ticket in my opinion. Then you also have both knapicks back with another year of development and strength gains. Hansen was pushing Henderson for a starting spot last year. Taylor or metalau can also slide in at guard. That’s not even mentioning Tuerk or Stewart.

Houser doesn’t have the mobility of Altmeyer but he gets rid of the ball much faster.

There are 3000 players in the portal and it’s impossible to rank them. Rusk being a 4 star shows that. Last year we added Coenen who didn’t start at his d2 school. Now he’s leaving us for a lot of money. There is a lot of talent at lower levels it’s all about identifying it

+infinity

anyone remember Fedj? straight outta powerhouse St Xavier. yeah, he was a walk-on, initially. but the point is, there are dudes playing in lower levels. the trick is ID-ing them

Some players are late bloomers. I would rather find a guy that produced at a lower level. Look at how guys like Enyce Sledge worked.
There’s 3 tiers:

1. Productive at P4
2. Productive at G5 / D2
3. Backup at P4

Productive at P4 are obviously the surest thing, but they’re also the most expensive. And I would take Productive at Lower Level over Backup at P4.

100% this. It's group #1 that is the most desired and what makes up the top 100-200 of these lists and have the highest probability of success

yep
and by D2, you actually mean FCS and DII - obviously Trinidad Chambliss #1 example of DII

edit : just checked - about 70% of NFL rosters are guys from P4. 30% are G5 or lowers levels
