Maybe and I'm only speculating here, if you have a player that you don't necessarily want to keep, but you might keep him at a discount for depth, you offer him a lot less money.Unfortunately the rumor is that Illinois is undervaluing players on the roster right now. McCullom supposedly had an offer on the table from Illinois for half of what another team offered.
I think we're saying something similar. There are plenty of good depth pieces to get from smaller schools, and they are hard to identify. The top group in the portal isn't hard to identify though as they've been successful players at this level already. We seem to be allocating our resources to prep recruiting (as evidenced by our best class in....forever?), which is perfectly fine. Now, ideally those kids stick around, at least the good ones
Question is: Does he get playing time?I assume Elzy is at LSU due to the George McDonald connection
I like the players we have picked up. We have added size, speed and athleticism which we needed. Our OL will be better, our receiving core is very deep. On defense, we have added speed. I trust Bret on finding the right fit for what we need.
Didn't know he had the Tre White syndrome...
As things stand right now I would say the offense talent wise is similar to what we had last year. Defense obviously isn’t but if we get X back and get a big splash at DT then that will change things
I mean both OTs and the QB are huge question marks compared to Luke, Priestley and Davis.
It shouldn't be that crazy. We've seen it with our own team...2016 Illinois went 3-9 and had 16 players who had some NFL timeCSU undoubtedly sucked.
CSU has some good players
both can be true, not rocket science
There are 3000 players in the portal and it’s impossible to rank them. Rusk being a 4 star shows that. Last year we added Coenen who didn’t start at his d2 school. Now he’s leaving us for a lot of money. There is a lot of talent at lower levels it’s all about identifying it
+infinity
anyone remember Fedj? straight outta powerhouse St Xavier. yeah, he was a walk-on, initially. but the point is, there are dudes playing in lower levels. the trick is ID-ing them
There’s 3 tiers:Some players are late bloomers. I would rather find a guy that produced at a lower level. Look at how guys like Enyce Sledge worked.
There’s 3 tiers:
1. Productive at P4
2. Productive at G5 / D2
3. Backup at P4
Productive at P4 are obviously the surest thing, but they’re also the most expensive. And I would take Productive at Lower Level over Backup at P4.

There are really good players on nearly every really bad teamWell, here’s hoping CSU was the most talented 2-10 team in the G5.
