Well people seem to think we lost a lot of good players on the DL. Which yeah we lost some solid players but we tend to hold our guys in higher regard than others simply because they are ours. They are just saying the guys we got so far are equally as talented as the guys who left….we also have a really good DL coach

Personally, I was so underwhelmed by the defense last year, anyone not named X, Gabe, Clarke, or Bailey departing was never gonna ruin my day.

It’s amazing how quickly narratives shift. 132 snaps in the MAC compared to 300 snaps at the big ten level. Not buying this nonsense. We are simply not talented enough on the D line. We all know it. Believe your eyes.

It went “from we’re getting upgrades” to “we think some of these guys are similar talent wise to the guys we said weren’t good enough and didn’t want to pay”.

So I'm not sure using about using men basketball player's on the D line... I feel they will lack positional size!!! 🤣

Respectfully, our DLine stunk so saying the incoming players are just as good doesn’t inspire confidence. Also, if we keep Aaron Henry that tells me that BB is only interested in going bowling and not making a run for the CFP

Hoping the MIA defensive linemen and DB's are looking to play next season in the Midwest......east central IL to be specific. They sure look very, very good tonight!

So, is the staff still in the hunt for a good DL starter(s), or has the narrative changed to we have our defensive linemen somewhat equal to what we had last year?

I don’t think the guys we’ve brought in are as good as the guys from last year. Not to mention the dline from last year sucked so I was fine with not over paying to keep guys

Big strong kid but I’m not sure what kind of prospect he will be. I know there was a lot of talk about benching him but his dad is on the board at Loyola Academy. He might’ve been benched for the playoff game I can’t remember

if we don't/can't land any experienced starters on the DL & LB between now and May 1, then
a. we need to ask why
b. we need to be concerned about the D as a whole

I totally understand why it may not have been done yet, but it would be nice to get it done over the next couple weeks

I like the secondary pieces as well. You are right, it’s almost to the point where its quantity over quality. But this is where selecting the right fit piece and coaching them up. I read that several players were trying to go back to their former school but their place was already taken. Bret has said that he would take any 2 deep player back. There are thousands of players left in the portal and our staff is actively looking at getting the right player/players.

I keep wondering why the exodus. There was such good retention last year. Was it just money, was there discontent between the players and coaches, bad luck?

Given the number of different fronts that Illinois uses and their propensity use the front 3 to slow down the game via substitution - I am a bit confused as to the need to "starter" in the front 5. Even Gabe Jacas sat for 25% of the snaps. Don't we want players that can play the role and similar to what we do in the running game to make it more difficult for opponents to isolate on players to create favorable match - ups by using 25 players on D and 18 - 20 players offensively? My interpretation of this is that the college game (unless you have players that can get off the ball similar to Indiana) has changed along with the NIL
