lol how many kids from York have we missed out on? Only one I can think of is Joe Rieff

just like Karner and Hulak are the only 2 from ic we have lost out on.
I dunno

those schools have had some decent guys over the years and we NEVER even get a sniff

kinda like Naz , and Driscoll back in the day

Honest question, how much of our reactions right now are still tied to an old mindset?

I won't disagree that it feels disappointing, just trying to look at this as a bigger picture in the hopes that we are being a little short-sighted.

Losing Lopati to Michigan is one thing. But I worry what was suggested that there’s less football money with more going to basketball. Obviously I want us putting together top 5 in the country basketball rosters. But I don’t want us to cede an inch in football. We are in a good spot in the Big Ten right now. Don’t want to give anyone else the opportunity to leapfrog us a push us back down to the bottom half or worse.

Rieff was their first p4 recruit in probably 30 years. Until recently York was a bad program

The 2 kids I mentioned with ic we offered and didn’t get. On the flip side KJ Parker camped at Illinois and we never offered. Now he’s at Iowa. 2027 recruit Josh Shaw and a couple P4 offers and no Illini offer

Driscoll was a good small school program but they didn’t produce p4 players.

Naz is a better example and a school we have never gotten a player from.

On the flip side look at a school like Montini. They’ve produced a lot of talent lately and we haven’t recruited their guys at all.

Our recruiting in the western suburbs in general has been historically bad. I know the coaches at these programs and they aren’t pushing kids from coming to Illinois. But if you’re only showing up to recruiting the kids the blue bloods are after it’ll be an uphill battle.

My frustration is tied only to the lack of salary caps. I understand the current legal obstacles but hope it happens someday. Then each school would recruit and compete with similar resources. Recruiting battles between schools would become much more interesting and strategic, entertaining in their own right. Athletes juggling comparable offers would weigh other factors more heavily.

De-commits are often overrated in football because it’s just one player, but there’s no glossing over losing the best QB recruit in a generation for the program.
Locked on Illini said it well, how about if we pay big bucks to the "best QB recruit," develop them for a year and THEN they transfer to UM. That would sure be worse, I think than the present situation. At least we are not out a bunch of money for nothing.

True enough on the recent history. Wasn't much D1 talent since I was in school there (early to mid 90s) until recently. Tim Stratton (Purdue TE) had probably been the last until a couple years ago and graduated in '96!

I would wait until the season and towards signing day to be overly concerned. Even the last two post Murray and O'Neil are major impact players who have/are visiting. You keep stacking those players with this roster and that is an elite team.
