Bret is strategically not spending for the 2027 recruiting class so that they can keep everyone they want that is currently on the roster. Only so much money, but this is on purpose. Good chance most of the top 50 Players for the 2027 team are on the 2026 team and he doesn’t want to lose them.
This makes a lot of sense also with 5 in 5 looming also. More older players to pay to retain.

I think fans are confusing spending on prep recruiting class and the roster as a whole. We spent a lot more than we have on the prep class last year but as always we will spend more on retention then we will on prep recruits.
Makes sense, but at some point you have to bring in new talent. I mean somebody has to recruit hi to highschoolers

We have a very good chance with all these kids. It sucks we are going to strike out in the top 10 but we can still have a very strong in state class
Will be interesting to track and see what happens with the top 30 of the class. As always, for a variety of reasons, a chunk are not very productive in college.

I would not be surprised to see 1-2 make their way into the portal after the 2028 season and end up being good players for the Illini from 2029-2031.

I know. I want all of them.

These kids aren't the cream, but they're far from chopped liver. All of them have the attributes of being legit BIG players. Super deep class.

prep recruiting has kinda sucked lately, but the 2 we got would be #1 and #3 (ratings-wise) for Iowa. now, that's in a vacuum, but things aren't quite as bleak as they seem(ed). very happy staff doesn't appear to be reaching (e.g. MAC-level kids)

I'm all in on the notion of building around our outstanding 2026 class, I just hope that plan has the strength to survive some turbulence in the short term.

Great planning and a great internal culture allowed us to bring the 2024 team back for more success in 2025, but the winds of the sport are howling against that sort of thing.
