Illinois Football Recruiting Thread

At the risk of being Debbie Downer, I just don’t get too hyped about commitments these days. It has gotten to the point that it seems akin to “I’m leaning toward going to” said school rather than true commitment. More so in football than in other sports.
Instead of Committed to _________, we should say ______________ Preference

Big risk to turn the program over without Boyd every starting before. I could see them bringing in someone like Paddock or Hampton for “competition”
Luke Altmyer had never been a starter, nor had he ever been within our building practicing with our team, which made him a much bigger mystery than Boyd.

It's a tricky balance, but if you recruit a player and you like what you're seeing from him in practice, it is higher upside and more cost effective and also just spiritually good IMO to hand him the keys.

That said, I definitely agree that you bring in a Paddock or Hampton type unless you feel super confident about a SECOND guy internally. It is going to be Year 5 under Lunney, we are building a full QB room of his scholarship recruits that we didn't have before.

Hopefully we empty the bench in those games. Last year we went for style points and got X hurt
I yelled at my TV for a good minute when that happened live. Henry, and Bret, not very wise. Don't forget one of those games they rolled several starters back in to stop a TD drive also, thankfully Jacas didn't have the same thing occur in a pointless point of the game.

They were worried about style points for the playoffs. Those game reps are huge for the 2nd string. Not to mention it keeps your starters healthy….

Off topic but when is the last 26 recruit going to be announced
Bret has mentioned that if someone has a season-ending injury there is some version of an NCAA rule that allows them to bring in another body to go past the "roster limit". So, if someone has a significant injury in June-July conditioning, you may hear of someone unexpected showing up for the start of pre-season camp in August. I would think it would be a JUCO guy, or a last-minute grad-transfer from a lower level.

Never say never with Bret. I would think they have a small list to still call on.

And then once the portal comes around at the end of the 2026 season, they then whittle things back down to the roster limit or take less guys in the portal or recruiting class based on how things progress with the current roster.

Yes ... Any major injury (season ending) will open up a roster spot ... Believe the season ending injuries that are public are currently Cam Brooks, Tanner Hollinger, Grant Smith and Eric Gayle (hopefully I have that list right) ... So that allows for up to 4 new additions to be made to the roster ...

I won't get into specifics of the kid joining the program other than it's a local kid ...

Those 4 names were all mentioned last week by Bret at the Wrigley press availability, you are correct.

Smith is out for this year as well? Hopefully all these guys are back sooner than later as I think all 4 could be surprise contributors at some point (Especially Brooks).
