I would add that while big donors at other programs helped to construct competitive rosters, Illinois’ big donor built a giant video board to run ads for his company on.

Disclaimer - I AM not throwing shade at a donor who put $100M into Illini athletics.
But, I do remember when the gift was announced, how quickly emphasis was placed on it being mostly stadium related and I was somewhat disappointed. And sadly (perhaps understandably), it's cooler when you get your name on something or can point to something that was built because of you.
That said, I don't go to many games because I live far away, so I admit i don't probably value the stadium upgrades nearly as much as many here do.

No matter how much money is thrown to the program and what for..... you take it with no questions.
I took it to mean the preference would have been for the money, or more of it, to go to the roster instead of the stadium.

Didn’t say anything about it not being enough, but it was definitely spent on the wrong things if the idea is to win.
Something to be said for making the fan experience better.

Just for clarification… he didn’t “give” $100 million. He received something in return. He made a transaction. A hefty one, to be sure. But it was most certainly not a gift.
