Another name I have heard...Marcus Freeman. Current Purdue LB coach and played under Lovie in Chicago.

I wasn't able to watch the presser. Did Lovie say anything about his staff?

LS said lots of people have been in touch with him and he's got lot's of contacts made over the years but no names mentioned. Expected to have a staff in place before the start of Spring practices in April.

I thought the original start date for Spring practices was 3/11? In other words, Friday.

Was this mentioned in the presser?

He said first of April. Needed some time to get the staff together. I'd guess if it comes together quickly they could move it up, but he definitely said April.

Just for clarification, pretty sure he said "no later than beginning of April"

Really would like to see Bellamy retained. Will help with current players, former players, and in recruiting.

if we can play the "tweet deciphering" game. He tweeted the grange statue with the caption "good day in Champaign. #Illini"

at the very least, i'd say he likes how the meeting went.

I think he relates really well and can recruit, but let's not forget the drop problems last year... thats an issue.

You're correct it was originally slated to start 3/11. On Saturday there was an announcement that Spring practices wouldn't be starting until head coach and staff were in place. Today Lovie did mention no later than beginning of April. So best guess is late March, beginning of April.

I honestly think that's more about talent than coaching. Dudek didn't have many drops in Bellamy's first year :D

Plus, the spring practice session would have been interrupted by spring break (1 week) anyway, as JW mentioned in a presser the other day, so delaying it until 1st of April isn't that big a deal....

Presumably Mike Phair remains DC, right? I guess there's a chance he could be demoted to DL/Asst DC. Any guesses on the defensive staff? I'm thinking something like this:

DC - Mike Phair
DL - ? Don't have a good guess here beyond double duty for Phair
LB - John Holecek
CB - Gill Byrd
S - Mikal Smith

I'd say Phair is at least going to be Co-DC. Lovie might have somebody in mind that is more permanent, but doubt he'd demote Phair.

Per Twitter, sounds like the assistant coach pool is $4 million, which would have been top 10 in the nation last year.

Lovie can do some serious damage with that kind of money.

"Illinois' new $4MM salary pool for assistant coaches would have ranked 10th in all of NCAA last year."

"Would've been 2nd best in the Big Ten (behind Michigan) last year."

Both quoted from Twitter.

Illinois stepped up, now time for the fans to step up. So far I've heard over a 1,000 new season tickets sold. Add some really good assistants....
