Illinois Football Staff Thread

Luke was here for year one of the Beckman era, right? I lay most of the blame for that disaster on Beckman's inability to get player buy-in and the co-offensive coordinator farce. Butkus has hung around the NFL since then, so he can't be that bad of a position coach.

1.5 Tom Cruises for me, not the start I was hoping for. That said, if the rest of the staff fills out well I'll be very happy.

Nephew of Dick Butkus - not a bad hire

Think Red Grange's grandson can coach running backs?

I'm holding out hope that isn't confirmed. From what I heard this was a pretty good disaster the first time around and it wasn't just Beckman.

Maybe he's improved since he left?? #fingerscrossed

You're drunk. He's a terrible OL coach and teacher. Thinks yelling is coaching but doesn't yell anything worth while.

This is a bad, bad hire.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to Ricker being a huge upgrade over Butkus at the time based on the post he was quoting, so you two are in agreement.

How is this a huge upgrade when it didn't work out just a few years ago?

You read wrong. I said Ricker was an upgrade over Butkus.

But, let's break this down...

  • Players loved Butkus when he was here
  • Never got along with Beckman from the start
  • OL is much more talented now
  • Gives us an Illini guy on the staff

I think we will see a difference from what we saw under Beckman, and how he'll coach under Lovie.

Not nearly as clued in as Qu, but this is very on par with what I've heard.

Uninspiring start-I hope the rest fills out well.

Don't mince words. But yes, we have a chance to hire proven coaches and we get a Beckman retread? :(

I just hope he can recruit. I guess he's ok as an OL coach because he was in the NFL for a few years and still had a job with the Jags, until now. A little underwhelming, but hope it will be better this time around.

Hope that is the case and it probably is. I just heard he was a yeller and screamer and the kids tuned him out. But I question why he's still a asst OL coach this far into his career.
