This isn’t real, but would be hilariously embarrassing.

Edit: Looks like it was already posted in the game thread.
lol, real or otherwise. Just hideous.

I don't recall Oklahoma's uniforms changing one bit over many decades. Nebraska's are timeless, too. No need to mess with a scheme that is associated with consistent success (excluding recent years for Nebraska.) But it's good to see OU playing the Huskers again. That was my second-favorite college football rivalry as a kid, Thanksgiving weekend every year. Some all-time classics back in the day.

That’s gotta be joke, right?
Remember when Black Heart Gold Pants did the fake alternates, oh, about 10 years ago?

Neither has been totally immune from the goofiness of recent years.

One thing you have to remember is how much of an industry there is around this stuff. Nike and Adidas, the schools themselves, equipment and sports information staff, websites, twitter accounts, all dedicated to the whole "OMG these new unis are 🔥🔥🔥" culture.

Which was genuinely revolutionary when Joey Harrington-era Oregon was doing it, and was definitely kind of compelling and subversive for awhile, but it has definitely kind of curdled into being rote and corporate and played out now, IMO.

not unlike MLB with each team having 4-8 novelty hats that they can sell in the souvenir shops,
some of these jersey "things" are just driven by how many different ones can they hang on racks and sell.

you would likely be surprised at what a school will do to raise an easy $100,000 in licensing for allowing another jersey to be worn in a game

There's truth in that, though I do think decision makers still have the sense that it's what they need to do to be "cool".

It was, once, sort of. It's not anymore.

From an Illini perspective I don't begrudge an orange-out every now and again, that's all in good fun, but the "tune in to Twitter on Thursday to see what FIRE combo we're going to be rocking this week!" is soooo played out now.

And I hope we're done with the Gray Ghost.

The worst uniform ever was Indiana in the 80's in Sam Wyche's year as coach. Road uni was crimson jersey with cream pants. The crimson next to the cream made the cream color appear pinkish.....made the uniforms look like pajamas. Couldn't find any photos so maybe IU successfully deleted all evidence that they ever existed.

Fine, I'll give you the Grey Ghost once a year if that means every other game gets 1 combination for home and 1 for road. We need a recognizable brand, and we've got the colors to do it, but changing it up every week (especially helmets) really makes it harder.

That really is the best we've ever done uniform-wise.
Love these uniforms. I was at this game, and at every home game that season with season tickets. I almost got divorced because my mother-in-law didn't like my idea that we switch our family’s traditional Thanksgiving sit down dinner at her house to a family tailgate (with a deep fried turkey) before the final game in Champaign that would determine the B1G Championship. I had a feeling that this was a game that would be significant, and I just thought we should all be there to witness and celebrate since we had stuck it through with season tickets since 1984. I was so upset when she said no way that I left my husband to deal with his mom, and I took our youngest daughter to Champaign to watch this awesome Illini team win the B1G Championship, a memory neither my daughter or I will ever forget.

I was there too! That was my first ever Illini game.

Good choice! My in-laws ALWAYS had to celebrate on the day and I told my wife I was going to the game. She said, "you're not going without me" and I said, "looks like we're all going to Champaign then!" We took our three kids, tailgated with turkey and had a blast.

I liked the '82 iteration but agree that the '89 redesign that carried on for years was solid. It's actually the closest thing to football uni branding we've had.

That '01 season was magic. It was the most recent time I've been able to attend a game. In the Horseshoe the weekend before Thanksgiving when we took down OSU 34-22 the week after that Penn State game. Was sitting down low at the 10 yard line in the open end when the boys blocked an early OSU punt right in front of us on the first OSU possession and recovered it in the end zone for the first score. Steve Fitts' punting was epic. He nailed several punts that game inside the OSU 10 yard-line, including one late that nailed the coffin shut.

What a team that year. And how quickly Turner subsequently drove it all into a ditch. (EDIT: OMG, was that really 20 years ago?!)

We all know how the game went, but those unis looked especially cool under the lights at the Superdome.

I was also one of the 45,755 that Thanksgiving. Hopefully the stars align for us to see another conference title someday.
Hopefully we get to a point where it doesn’t take the stars aligning!

1. On Red Line Radio this past week, Coach seemed to indicate he was in favor of having standard uniform combinations that are our default homes and aways, rather than switching combinations up for each game. He seems to value having a visual identity for the program. I take this to mean we will probably see 🔶🔷🔶 for all but two home games. Then idk, maybe 🔶⚪🔷 for most road games? Anyway, sounds like some of us will be getting our wish granted.

2. Also…
Edit: Yeah it’s probably just a one-off helmet for Week 0. I wish it was more, but at least we are making an effort.

Someone in the other thread said I needed to calm down.

NO I WILL NOT OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU BERT

(Those are white facemasks and a helmet stripe at least, if you can't tell)

I dont think its a one off for week 0. I think Brett has made it clear he is not into that kind of stuff and is into more of a classic identity

I don't actually love the Giants helmets, but I do love how much everyone else seems to love them. I'm happy if Illini Nation is happy.

Well and as we've been saying for years, everything about our helmet is maddeningly, inexplicably just objectively incorrect, in a way no one would ever choose. No sense in ever going back to that the moment we do something else.

My best guess is that it will be the proper white-bordered block I on the sides. But who knows.

The blue facemask was a fine enough idea in theory, but it always looked bad in real life, good riddance.

I’m not sure I’m a fan with bringing back the white accents on the helmet without bringing back any white numbers or letters or accents on the jerseys. To me that leaves a disconnect between the helmet and the rest of the uniform. I feel like we have to go all in on one approach or the other.
