We did the outline on the slant before, for a number of years, and I agree it looks better. Not sure why we don't prefer this to the non-outlined version.I liked our helmets yesterday, and am pretty sure they will work their way in to a rotation of one of 5 or so possibilities any given weekend.
I liked the subtle blue outline around the script and wished we did that with the slant Illinois as well, as we do it with the arched Illini already
JMO, but the slant ILLINOIS really only gained any steam recently due to looking pretty retro and evoking a feeling of nastolgia … it seemed like a decided majority of fans didn’t like them at the time. And the slant ILLINOIS without the outline looks much more retro than the version with the outline. We did the outline on the slant before, for a number of years, and I agree it looks better. Agree with you on the lack of blue outline on the slant. What is your opinion on the outline around the script? I think the outline looks better on the script than without, but I'm curious to hear what others think about it.Hard, hard, hard disagree about the outline around slant Illinois. No outline allows the white to pop and stand out in a clean way. The late 2000s outline mutes the white, and I think that’s what led to it becoming such a stale ugly helmet by the Beckman era. Josh knows the 2001 era version absolutely slaps.
They also need different sized stickers based on the helmet. It looked perfect on Pat's but too small on Luke's. We looked so good against Nebraska and Penn State in them, looking forward to seeing them on the home blues next year.Hard, hard, hard disagree about the outline around slant Illinois. Glad to see no O/O/O. Would really like to see O/O/B some day. Here's my 2025 wish list, haha. For purposes of my explanation below, I will consider my two preferred "default" uniforms to be O/B/O with Script helmets (i.e., the bowl game combo) at home and O/W/O with Script helmets on the road. Yes, I am boldly proclaiming that we should wear the Scripts unless we have a good reason to do otherwise!
vs. Western Illinois: O/B/O with Script helmets
at Duke: O/W/O with Script helmets
vs. Western Michigan: O/B/O with Script helmets
at Indiana: O/W/B with arched ILLINI helmets
vs. USC: O/O/W with slant ILLINOIS helmets
at Purdue: O/W/O with Script helmets
vs. Ohio State: O/B/O with slant ILLINOIS helmets
at Washington: O/W/O with Block I helmets
vs. Rutgers: O/B/O with Script helmets
vs. Maryland: O/B/O with Veteran's Day helmets
at Wisconsin: O/W/B with arched ILLINI helmets
vs. Northwestern: O/B/O with Script helmets
Postseason: O/B/O with Script helmets if we are home, O/W/B with Script helmets if we are away ... could also be persuaded to do O/W/O if we are away to stay more "classic"
The "off" game notes/reasoning:
Indiana: FINALLY bust out the O/W/B combo for what should be a huge early game in Bloomington. I actually played with this combo for this game on EA College Football 25 last night, and our navy pants provided a great contrast against their red. Also, it seems we wore navy pants a lot more during the arched ILLINI helmet era, so that look went really well together.
USC: Hopefully this is a prime time game under the lights, and we can make it an orange out while the weather is still nice enough to get people to not wear navy!! I also really want to see the white pants with the orange jerseys just to make it a bit more understated, as we did during the Juice Williams years. On that same note, it's as good of time as any to honor the slant ILLINOIS legacy. If anyone needs nostalgia for that exact look, it is the uniform and helmet combo worn by Hawthorne when he chased down Michigan and we had that epic goal line stand!
Ohio State: Do you know the last time we beat OSU in Champaign? You might not want to look it up because it is pretty depressing, but ... here it is. In 1991, we rocked our classic home combo and the slant ILLINOIS helmets and took them down. Hopefully this brings us some good luck!
Washington: Figured we had to wear the Block I helmets once, lol.
Maryland: I believe this is the Military Appreciation Day game? I actually don't have a strong opinion whether we go with the Block I American flag design or the cool patriotic spin on slant ILLINOIS that we did this year vs. Minnesota ... both are great.
Wisconsin: Pretty much the exact same reasoning for the combo at Indiana.
Postseason: We looked so damn good vs. South Carolina, and it was an awesome look to showcase to a national audience; we should stick to it when we're in any type of postseason, from the Big Ten Championship to a bowl game to the CFP. As for the away combo, I think you can't go wrong. Our O/W/O is classic and looks great, but I also like the idea of some type of special "twist" put on "big games," which these would obviously be ... hence #BPOTR.
Unfortunately, I favor not replicating the Grange Era uniforms very often so as to make them special. I also think unless we enlarge the numbers and switch the striping from W/B/W to B/W/B, the Butkus Era helmets served their purpose for last year's anniversary. There are also a few combos that I either already love aesthetically (O/B/B) or would be curious to see aesthetically with these new sets (O/B/W), but not at the expense of sacrificing a consistent look.

Rotate between the Block I, arched ILLINI and script Illinois.
Launch slant ILLINOIS into the sun.
Bingo bango done and dusted.
Yeah, I can see where my post could have done that.

yea, sell those gently used white ones to Penn St for 25% offNo matter the logo, the helmet is going to to be Orange.
That ain't script though.... I guess we could have a discussion about whether it is formal or casual..... ;-)Do like Duke's variation of the script helmet
