Early on, still have a 6 stroke lead at plus 8. All 5 golfers are inside the top 17. That’s the consistency we need to compete for a National title.

As we hear about the conditions for this weekend, my admiration for coach Small grows! How does he talk all these great players into staying this far north when there are so many golf schools in the south, south-west and California? Yet there we are, competing with the big guys year after year!
I live full time in Florida, where we have maybe 300+ GREAT golf days a year ( and I golf maybe 200 of them!) The Big ten area maybe gets 150 a year and it doesn't become dependable until...now. Yet there's coach Small, fielding a top-notch team all the while building for future teams.
If our basketball team has a player who sits for five minutes, or a starting line-backer who hears footsteps in the spring game, they sprint for the portal.
I'm sure Small has lost a few as well, but he's an ICON. hope all of our coaches learn to emulate him.
Me too. In fairness golf is a pretty difficult sport to air live. Especially team golf where guys are spread out all over the golf course.
Good day for the Illini. We are 14 strokes up during the second round. We have a 4 way tie for the individual title including Kuhl and Besard. Will be a fun day tomorrow with another B1G title.
Top 4 golfers in the top 8. We are playing like a National Champion team.
Most of these kids have aspirations to play at the next level. Small points out to them that they will play in all sorts of weather at that level. If they want to prepare for that inevitability they need to play in all sorts of weather at the college level. He can offer that. If you drive down St. Mary's Road in the middle of February you are likely to see the guys out at Demirjian smacking some balls around.
Hard to believe that de Chassart will be the score that is dropped today (E) right now.
Well, he just finished a stroke ahead of Besard. Besard was our top guy yesterday and now the bottom guy today. Pretty good when your bottom guy finishes below par.
Yes. And Mathis is T3 for the tournament! Strange. Some kind of irony that his score is dropped from team total.
Yeah, I guess Illini are pretty good.

What Coach Small has done with the program is nothing short of amazing. I think this could be the year.
Yes to the first part. And I hope so to the second.
Buchanan’s emergence into a really high level player is exactly what this team needed. That kid has had an amazing year. Hopefully they close it out strong tomorrow!

We need to still put the hammer down even though we are up by 17 strokes. Not only are we looking for our 8th straight, 13 of the last 14 years and the record setting 20th overall, we could not only have an individual winner but could put all 5 golfers inside the top 10. Mike Small is the best college golf coach in America and is already a member of the GCAA Hall of Fame and the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.
