Chin better start eating his Wheaties. He's going to be a hard get.

I agree with S&C on this one in that this is a recruitment that Chin needs to win. No matter how heavy the competition is, this is exactly the type of recruitment he was hired to win

Okay, I have never seen Bruninga play, nor did I ever see Happ play in HS, but other than the Wisconsin offer, what offers did Happ have? Verbal Commits shows only 2 other offers (Milwaukee and UW Green Bay), both out of the Horizon League.

Same source shows Bruninga with several offers including 3 from Missouri Valley Conference, so other than Wisconsin, who has (had) the better offers?

Ethan Happ committed the summer before his Jr. year, so the situations aren't comparable. He would certainly have had more offers if he waited until April of his Sr. year.

Not enough talent currently on roster to realistically finish top half of the Big or to make the tourney. Recruiting class cut in half and looks like Smith going elsewhere. BU looks like he can coach but where are the players going to come from. If Illini has another miss on the tourney for the 5th year in a row which is likely recruiting is going to become really tough. Also 18 does not look like a good year in state making things even tougher for BU. If things are going to get better afraid it may take awhile. Very restless fan base BU's honeymoon could be short though I hope he is able to turn things around quicker then I think will happen

Not sure why you are more confident today. While I never assume we get someone vs the field, I feel better now vs any previous time.

The best downstate crop of talent that we've had in a very, very long time... and it sounds line we are going to be O-fer. That really sucks

Maybe it is just because I have been conditioned to have my Illini hopes and dreams crushed but I feel deja vu settling in. We get all worked up about the potential of great recruiting classes and they don't pan out for one reason or another. We dismiss these failures by consoling ourselves that we have great recruiters and we are "in" with the next recruiting class and then we rinse and repeat. We hire a new coach and we get all excited about a change in the culture....
I am not ready to jump off the ledge but I am way to cynical right now to drink the Kool Aid! Here is to hoping that my spider senses are way off!

And it seems like just a month ago we were laughing our butts off at Indiana for going 0-fer. Wait, it was just a month ago.

Ayo back on the court. But according to this he got coached up too.
If he hit a growth spurt and is really 6-5, whoa nelly.

This is the type of recruit Chin was hired to win But a lot has to fall in place for us to win this recruit. We have a better chance with Chin but if we get our hopes up here we are setting oursleves up to get dashed again. Having said that. Chin didn't come to Illini with an Ayo guarantee. Just saying. I hope he helps with Chi town... i think he will but we will just have to wait and see

We don't need em. Those downstaters just want us to kiss the ring. Let them go. Zero loyalty. We can do it without them.

So, we don't need any recruits from Chicago or downstate. I can't believe we have been wasting our recruiting time on these guys all that's years :hand:

Since we decided to fire Groce, you should have expected to keep none of the class we had. Mark Smith was a wildcard and we don't have much to offer compared to MSU and UK. I'm happy we kept who we did so far. Too much BS with some of these other guys, which seems to be a common issue in STL and Chicago. Cut and run to the next guys.

Yes. DMW was who I wanted more than anyone else in the class. Before the emergence of Smith. I was so happy when we got DMW. People are sleeping on him I think. Rightfully so though now with the injury and all. So we will see what happens there.

To watch which serious Illinois recruit?

Correct IlliniFin86, Bruninga has only concentrated on basketball for 1 year which gives him a lot of upside moving forward.
So we should expect little to no production this year; then we should question whether or not he belongs in the Big Ten and then after an injury to another big, he produces respectable numbers towards the end of his junior year. Maverick Morgan story aside (who had power 5 offers), this kid won't sniff a lick of production for quite awhile. Ethan Happ and Frank the Tank were developed by Wisconsin. I don't know if those guys would have produced like they did if they went elsewhere.
well, looks like Kentucky might be in the lead. Has BU sent any kids to the NBA?

Thomas Walkup plays in the D league. As mentioned previously, I guess you can try to argue Jawun Evans. It's hard with him spending 3/4 years at SFA.

I can see Mark Smith as a 2 yr player wherever he goes. Illini route could be similar to Mello at Maryland experience; lots of playing time and accolades early. At KY I think he may get a Ulis like experience; serviceable backup until they need him in a bigger role.

Ulis at Kentucky was a lot more than serviceable backup right off the bat. Ulis averaged 24 minutes per game his first year on one of the most loaded teams in college basketball and Kentucky history. Not only did he average 24 minutes per game, but nobody on that team averaged more than 26 minutes per game, and that team had several NBAers.

The Ulis-like experience at UK is a major, major plus for Smith.

Thanks for the tip! DVR is set.

What other names might we recognize in this game? I know Smith is gonna be rooming with a KU commit (not good for us).
