Recently went back and watched video on Da'Monte Williams. When healthy, he is really, really, really, really good. I mean REALLY good. Little doubt he will show the world why he was ranked Top 50 at one point and I, for one, can't wait to see it!

I watched a few of Damonte's games from before the injury, and while the tools are all there, he seems to fade in and out of games similar to DJW. Saw a lot of ball watching.

I'd also imply that it's a two-way race between us and Virginia for Badocchi?

I hope we land the kid. I feel like Illinois has been cursed with no great dunkers since Brian Randle threw the dunk contest after his Senior Year.

I remember him throwing down or failing to throw down the weakest honey dips I've ever seen

Just got done talking with @frankiejones23. Finished his official visit this morning. Heading to Virginia today and making decision soon

DISCLAIMER: I have never watched any of our recruiting targets in person, only very few highlights.

But, I really want this kid. His size and athleticism is perfect as a complementary piece to an uptempo style team. A guy that can defend a few positions, run the floor, get rebounds, and finish around the rim is perfect to fit in next to skilled guards.

Who are the ex-Illini players who had the biggest gaps between Fan hype/expectations and actual results? Jereme Richmond is probably the headliner, but there must be others...

For old-timers here, Kevin Bontemps and Audie Matthews.

For anyone who, like me, didn't know that we were recruiting someone named Frank Jones...this is Francesco Badocchi

Badocchi in Italian is the same as Smith or Jones in USA...speaking of Smith could they be related....I kid I kid...sign em both up!!!:chief:

McBride was a typical example of someone who had matured earlier compared to peers. He was projected as a superstar as a freshman in HS, but progressively the hype died down by Sr. year. Still a highly ranked player, but he had a consistent decline even before he got to UI.

I'd heard that McBride had a chronic physical issue. I felt Liberty and Keene would be considered underachievers, considering the hype they entered school with.

Jens Kujawa:eek:

Jens remains the subject of my favorite Illini moment of all time and ironically Dick Vitale was the source.

It was in the final moments of the double overtime win over Georgia Tech to ensure the #1 ranking the following week.

"Lou got all over me when I told him I had Illinois #2 in my preseason poll. Lou says 'Dick, did you know we lost Jens Kujawa?' I said 'Looooouuu, had I known you lost Kujawa I would have made you #1!'"

Haha - I remember that line well!

Classic Lou always downplaying how good his team is and the absurdity of him being concerned about losing his slow 7 foot center on that team (he would have been a complete fish out of water with the pace of play of that team).

Ironically, Jens may have made a difference in the final four against Michigan down low given the size differential and how that game played out - although I've never actually thought that thought until just now.

Thanks, sdfidaho! I fully agree.

Audie helped bring Illinois back from the depths of the latter Harv Schmidt era, the days of 5 or 8-win seasons and a near-empty Assembly Hall. Audie coming to Illinois was the real start of the upswing in Illini basketball.
