LOVE the offer to THT. He's exactly the kind of player they've been missing. Not concerned with whatever his ranking is. You win with players like him. Doesn't do any one thing great. But he competes. We need more dogs. Unfortunately Goodwin fit that mold, but we all know that story

Exactly. While not giving up on any big names, Underwood is, as others have pointed out, trying to fill the roster with athletes he feels will fit his system, whether they are 2 star, 3 star or higher. So Underwood is going to win with the types of athletes who fit his system, the ones who want to play basketball and want to prove they should have been ranked higher and to prove it they will beat MSU and those types of programs and then we will get 4 and 5 star recruits.

So all we have to do is get 2 - 3 star who fit a system, outcoach Izzo by the difference of 2-3 star vs. 4-5 star talent and we are good. Sounds easy enough!

Yep... which also begs the question, if you can consistently beat MSU and those types of programs with lower level talent, why do you even care about getting higher level talent?

BU will need to radically elevate the talent level. His staff composition clearly shows that he wants to move in this direction, yet, it does not guarantee that he he will be successful in actually getting the needed talent.

I think we are at a clear disadvantage in 2017-18 with the current roster and such short runway, but let's see on what happens. Mark Smith and some other players are still in play and surprises may happen. But independent of 2017-18, I'd expect a very solid 2018 recruiting class with many additional names to emerge. I'd also expect some roster changes in the next couple of years, always happens with a new staff.

Yep. Get the right coach with HIS system and HIS players and they win a high percentage of the time. Bo/Wisc ??

Exactly but we are going to be a system that is on the extreme other side of Ryan's and BU is going to attract top talent in time. His style of play will do that and if we can get a key commit (Mark Smith) or two this team will be dancing this year. That is the first thing that has to happen. WE CAN NEVER MISS THE TOURNAMENT AGAIN (this year is understandable if it happens but never again after that, we are Illinois not NIU).

+1. I'm already tired of hearing about how he doesn't care about rankings and recruits for his system. You know who else fits his system besides diamond-in-the-rough, exception-to-the-rule type of recruits? High end talent.

F. How important is proximity?

We have that one on the others, too, and if he is comfortable enough with the rest it might help outweigh some of the others.

G. Loyalty, for lack of a better word. If the kid grew up an Illini fan, he has to be flipped on that regard by any other program. Yeah, it's his future in the NBA and all that, and that's hardly inconsequential, but if he's grown up Orange and Blue, if he can sing the Illinois Alma Mater, if he can say "Oskee-wow-wow" without being embarrassed, if he knows what to say if someone says I-L-L-, if he's been to the Cracker Barrel in Edwardsville and walked past the Illini display just inside the front door, if he's ever been to the Assembly Hall and cheered for the Fighting Illini, if he's ever seen Chief Illiniwek dance (wait, scratch that), if he's ever felt part of the Illini Nation, if he knows he'll have to play against all that when he plays in the Assembly Hall...he has to put all that aside and put on a green jersey and call himself a Spoortan. That matters too. And that's a mark--intended--in our favor.

Very happy about the THT offer. I've only seen the highlights, but I love his game and motor.

I get the Sergio and Dennis Douglas comparisons in terms of body type, but THT looks to be more skilled. Reminds me a bit of Alando Tucker.

For those who've seen Ayo play, how is he when he goes left? The highlight tapes depict him as exceedingly right hand dominant. When he goes left it's only for like a dribble, and then shoots a right handed shot. Anybody with deeper knowledge of his game that can give me some perspective?
