I hope we all stay grounded with the Smith recruitment. Let's not forget that this is a guy who just started taking basketball seriously. He will have much to learn at the next level. The quicker he puts it all together the better. If he commits to us that is...

The word I have heard is that he is concentrating on his academics.

I guess that he might really need to do that, but this seems like a crucial moment to step out from the recruiting process. Valuable spots are going to be taken up at good schools.

I guess that means though that he really is going to be taking this selection process seriously, and that it isn't a given he's going to any one school.

Interestingly, I'm hyped on Smith because "this is a guy who just started taking basketball seriously," and yet landed offers from the likes of MSU and UK. I see it as higher upside/more room to improve. Maybe it's just kool aid. :)

He might be waiting to see what Michael Porter's brother Jontay does. JP was talking about possibly reclassifying to 2017 to play at Mizzou next year. Tilmon might not want to be 3rd fiddle.

100% speculation on my part. I'm not an insider. Although Mark Smith's coach goes to our church:thumb:

This isn't factual, just a rumor(could be completely false) but if you can't qualify it doesn't really matter if a slot is taken or not until you can qualify.

Sorry, but no.

Well that's tough logic to beat, but he sure beat out some guys with much higher RSCI for Mr. Basketball in IL this year including Tilmon and Goodwin. When was the last time Cal went after a guard who was the 74th best prospect in the country this late in the game?

Mark Smith would be huge for next years team. Kid is going to keep getting better. He had a PHENOMENAL senior season. He is going to be a very good college player and the sky is the limit for him. I was fortunate enough to watch a lot of his games this season and am hoping that I get to watch him in the Orange and Blue next year. I heard that he came away very impressed from the visit last Thursday and that we are in a good position for this one. Can't wait for Wednesday to get hear to see what happens!

Just FWIW, Smith will likely be a lower RSCI recruit than Kendrick Nunn, Leron Black and Jalen Coleman Lands.

What we as a fanbase need is to win games. I've been meaning to update and bump the "Power Five Misery Index" thread, but spoiler alert, our singular, unique level of both sport failure just separates further from every single other school by the season.

I don't care what Smith's ranking is, he is obviously better than that to high profile programs as we have seen. You want us to win more games, great! Smith is a player we believe can help get us there. I feel like the chicken and the egg debate would be interesting from your point of view. Im in the Smith goes elsewhere camp as well, but I want to be wrong so badly. It seems like you revel in the fact that our programs are down and their is no hope to pull high quality guys. If you actually feel that way (not saying you actually do) then why even be around this board other than the constant need to knock down everyone's expectations? It's a fan message board, obviously we dream of getting back to the best years we remember as fans, even if it isn't always likely.

This late in the game is why. Smith is a very scarce resource at this late date. Anyone with an open spot would want him, and have a chance to get him, since John Groce and Tom Crean got fired and he didn't really have deep ties to anyone else.

I don't want to diss the kid, I'd love to see him here. But he's not a 5-star recruit because he's not a 5-star recruit, not because only his special friends on the Illinois message boards know about him.

DWill wasn't a 5 star either...just sayin

You watched him play some too right? Seems like your two most recent arguments are... "we won't get him" and "he's not that good anyway." :noidea:

Almost nothing about this post is accurate. Blue bloods do not shop for leftovers. Not sure what your agenda is here, but you are being unduly dismissive of the value of Mr. Smith. He may not be "5-star", but he is a very desirable recruit as made evident by the coaches who have pursued him.

He's terrific, but people are overstating it because they're getting into a tizzy based on the same blind optimism that we've had for every single recruit ever at this stage in the process.

*Learning lesson and shutting up now*

I'll be extremely happy if Mark Smith commits here just because he is Mr Basketball, all the blue bloods were interested and he has obvious great talent. He's athletic, bouncey, and available at this late stage. He may not be a 5 star, but he would have an impact on this team for next year and beyond!!!
