The Portillo's Chocolate Cake-shake is one of the best inventions ever..

..and I hate you. No freaking Portillo's, Lou's or Giordano's in Peoria and I can't figure out why. Peoria is full of slothenly hog feeders who love them some good old food loaded with fat, carbs and flavor so sales would not be an issue.

Easy on Ptown bruh! lol

I hate to do this to you... but I'm going to walk to Portillo's for lunch.

Thanks for the inspiration :thumb:

Same here. Very fond memories of that team.
Yeah, that team was awesome. Smith had that sweet jumper and turn around from the FT Line area, EJ rained 3's before we had the 3 pointer, and Holcombe did his Moses Malone imitation missing 25 shots a game from zero feet and padded his rebound stats.

To me Smith is one of the more underrated Illini players of all time. Even though EJ gets more talk, it isn't what he should be getting. To me that was one of the better Illini teams in our history (top 15), and is never talked about....or the players. It was tough as hell to make the tourney back then. I mean EJ was in the league averaging around 20 a night for what seemed like 30 years and he was damn good in college.

but I digress........anybody got an Al's beef, slice of Pequod's and Trefzger's cheese danish for me for dessert? :D

I agree, I find that article by Tate to be weird.
I have to admit -- I love Loren Tate. I never miss him on Saturday mornings (via podcast). You want to talk about someone with a mastery of ILLINI sports history, wow!

I figure he either has a legitimate source, or he's making the statement, "I'm down to my final few years, and who gives a &%?@ if I'm wrong."

Then again, I also love Bill Walton and Dan Dakich.......go Loren!

Umm did you set them out in the open for 4 days? Trefzger's is anything but dry. I am pretty sure it is lard (plus a little sumpin else) that gives it the distinctively delicious taste so with all that fat dry shouldn't be the case. 40 lashes with a wet noodle for you, Big Fella!

;)

From day one lol, they have been forcing these awful products on me for almost 30 years!!! I dont know a single person who agrees with me though, so you my friend win this discussion.

Newspapers with daily circulation of 22,000, do desperate things.
Nothing desperate about it and as a trained former working journalist and college instructor of the same, the Gazette is a very, very good paper. Tate, like him or not, is a legend, and, while you might not like his opinions, he is not one to run stories without credible basis. You can choose to not believe him, but there was not one thing wrong with his column on Smith.

So they just let anyone in here now?

I'm in Pennsylvania but I grew up in Metro East (which at that time we just called kinda across the river from St. Louis but not exactly) and I've heard that this cake was not made for the Smith family but someone did sometime or another and that's good enough for me.

Iman94, do you know me???

FYI, take the trip down to Chambana. Giordano's now open in the mall and Portillo's is close to opening.

Tate is a columnist, which generally have different guidelines for stories than actual news stories. Like him or not, on thing about Tate is he isn't going to run with info that isn't solid, so I would say this is as good of positive news as this board has seen on this situation to date.

I understand journalism and the difference between a reporter and columnist. You are right that columnists are different - they are quite free to express their opinions but generally still source their factual assertions. But what Tate provides are factual assertions and not opinions. Example being he didn't say he suspects Tilmon gave a commitment. He says he did.

He's a good basketball analyst. Hard to separate Dan the "radio personality" and Dan the analyst. Sometimes they blend together during games.

I simply don't like the stealing the thunder from the kid, unless like I said the family gave him the okay to run. Tate is well respected as you said (yes he is a cranky and opinionated old dude but I will be even worse if I make it to that age so I am okay with that) and it isn't like him to run stories like this.

Now do I believe he has solid information? Yep That was not my issue.

That is too awesome. Mark Smith is an all time Illini great and he, EJ and Derrick Holcombe were my introduction to Illini basketball....I fell in love and have bled orange and blue ever since.

RIP Mark Smith.

yeah this is right about the time I really got into Illini basketball as well, but Chubby Phillips and seeing the Chief at my first football game, was what really did it for me, as far as becoming an Illini fan.

Mine as well. My brother started at UoI Fall of 78. I remember watching the MSU-Illini game in 79 with Eddie hitting the baseliner.

Great team. Mark Smith was a stud.

Tate does not have a history of making things up, although I find his personal opinions of Illini sports (not the case in this article) totally off the wall. He is also a hypocrite in criticizing the fan's obsession with recruiting news/rumors. Tate made his entire career around publishing Tatelines, a column that used to be full of tidbits and rumors around recruiting during the Henson era. Tate was very close to the Henson staff who readily passed him credible pieces of information, especially in recruiting.

With the emergence of modern internet and the departure of the Henson staff, Tate lost his stronghold on such information and started to readily criticize the fans' desire to read recruiting news. This article is another hypocrisy, everyone and their mother know about Smith, pretty much everyone has directly or indirectly hinted that Smith will be an Illini. It is credible. Yet, Tate runs with a published story to get the hits, despite stealing Smith's spotlight, and despite his constant criticism of recruiting news.

Gotcha. I understand about the thunder issue, but in today's world of journalism, like it or not, it's about the scoop, although since this, to me, is more of an opinion think based on what Tate is hearing from his sources than an outright declaration. The JT thing did read as a definite statement, so he must surely have heard from someone close to the situation that he fully trusts to give him the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
