Hey guys idk if this is the place to put this or not. I've been an Illini fan since I was 9 years old (2003). I've followed recruiting pretty closely since the whole D-Jax debacle. Other than Eric Gordon, are there any other big recruiting disasters that have happened to Illinois?

A quick Google search would turn up a number of articles that have been written in the past few weeks that detail this.

In a word, yes.

EDIT: search for "Cliffmas."

Really like Francesco's tape. At the very least he has to be a player you took a chance on and try to develop. You can't teach that length and athleticism. The tools are there.

BU said he doesn't care about the stars and may know more about who fits his system than the board. This type of athlete reminds me of the flying Illini. This guy can play defense. You can coach shooting not athleticism. Smaller version of Kiir.

Found on the comment tree of the actual Night Before Cliffmas poem:

1: So what would losing both Cliff and Snider be like?
2: Getting clothes for Christmas.

If only it had been that benign...

Other than Eric Gordon? Hmmm....nope, can't think of any off the top of my head. Oh, maybe Russell Cross but that was so long ago. I guess you could count LaPhonso Ellis but that, too, was all the way back in the 80s. Then there was Juwan Howard....you know what? I think I'd better stop here. I've got a lot of work to do today and depression just makes me shut down. :)

I was here for Cliffmas. I should've specified. I mean like pre Eric Gordon.

Livingston was huge. I was in the Krush leadership during his recruitment and we pulled out all the stops when he was on campus. The day before the announcement, he reportedly wore a Brian Cook jersey to school. When he chose Duke, the message board fanbase went crazy and ugly. I posted a bunch of apologies on the Duke message board and got skewered by the fans and DIA for it. Pretty rough times. Even though he went straight to the NBA - that one was the first emotional spurn in my era of fandom.

Then of course after Self left, Villanueva, Julian Wright, Sherron Collins, John Sheyer - Then the Eric Gordon saga... blah blah blah. Rinse and Repeat.

One thing I have always found to be true, especially back in my younger days when I had peers that were prospective college athletes: the better the athlete, the worse the fan. I have found that pretty much universally.

The more similar you are to the guys on the TV screen, the harder it is to be irrational in the way true fandom requires.

Kids who are great athletes will watch sports 24/7, but don't become as emotionally attached to "their" team as we slow-footed slobs. And this is usually somewhat sport-specific.

I had a buddy in high school who played college baseball, and he was a die-hard Bears fan, but a fairly tepid White Sox fan who didn't really get all that invested in it. Baseball wasn't escapism for him. Being a sports fan is all about escapism.

You are absolutely right. I play college baseball and can rarely sit down and watch an entire Cardinals regular season game. Playoff baseball is a different animal but I agree that athletes do not get emotionally attached to a team like most fans do. They all have their teams but just watch for enjoyment.

Also, Badocchi is obviously a great athlete playing for a powerhouse high school, why doesn't he have more offers?

Note that there are only two shots in that video that aren't at the rim and one of them is a free throw.

Recruit videos are like Tinder profiles, you always have to be aware of what they're NOT showing you. ;)

You mean he's actually 40 lbs heavier, has bad skin, has 5 cats and collects Hummel figurines?!

Mark Smith went to MSU this weekend received the full court press. Their other guard target committed to Mizzou. And yet he didn't verbal. To me this is the recruiting news of the week. We are hangin around.

The way this is going there should be a thread over where the Illinois high school basketball state championship should be held!

That said, if it really is "Our State, Our Team," we should let the state in on Our Facilities. If Illini sports really are "the front porch of the university," then we ought to let the little kids play in the front yard, at least. Every paper in the state would be using "University of Illinois" every day there's a game held there.

BTW, the high school state marching band championship is held where? Not in Evanston. Not in Peoria. They're held in Memorial Stadium, and it's worth a lot of goodwill for the university. Every kid who marched there, every parent who attended, has been on campus and is more likely to support the school financially (via tax dollars) and otherwise.

For the basketball championships, it's not just the effect it has on basketball recruit a or b, it's also goodwill for the university.

Wasn't from a lack of trying. This year was the year to get it back with the renovations and all, and the IHSA still chose to stay in Peoria.
I was one who said the tournament would leave Peoria for Champaign and was wrong.

I like to think he's waiting to see what Bridges does. If Bridges stays and Jemarl Baker announces for Kentucky on Wednesday, I think our chances go up. Maybe not to very good, but at least 50/50.

I didn't think it would leave Peoria. But I do think it will leave soon. Not sure it is Peoria's fault. But it is time to move the tournament and see what happens.

I'm sure this opinion will surprise absolutely no one, but Kentucky is hanging around, not us.
