Alonzo Verge is someone to keep an eye on. I think that there's a good chance, he winds up redshirting wherever he goes, but this kid has talent, and I wouldn't be surprised to see BU take a look

It's amazing how this thread always turns to food when we're waiting on big decisions

I think we look for comfort, and food is comfort. Because it's hard to type when curled in a fetal position...

I need two things today:

1. A Mark Smith commitment.
2. A first class upgrade on my flight home.

If I only get one, I would gladly sacrifice #2 if we get #1!

I understand journalism and the difference between a reporter and columnist. You are right that columnists are different - they are quite free to express their opinions but generally still source their factual assertions. But what Tate provides are factual assertions and not opinions. Example being he didn't say he suspects Tilmon gave a commitment. He says he did.

This is correct. Attribution rules don't change from the opinion page to the news section.

Unless they talk him into going to a prep to get his grades up I don't think you will see this

It seems pretty obvious Verge will need to go the Prep/Juco route which is unfortunate because the kid can flat out play. Would love to see him in O&B but just doesn't seem likely in the short term.

I am not a journalist, but I am not sure this is the case. While attribution rules are very strict in publishing research papers (something that I am very familiar with), news reporting, from credible outlets nevertheless, very often mention the perennial "according to source(s)" or even report news implying "according to source(s)" without naming them. Much of our history, and global history, not only sports but politics, etc. has been created with articles breaking news like that, without disclosing sources.

So here's my question in regard to Smith. It seems like his entire recruitment has been pretty close to the vest, why has word gotten out right before his decision that he is going to Illinois? A few days ago, nobody seemed to have any idea where he was going.

I'd keep talking to him but I wouldn't be shocked to see him go to a juco. Maybe help a bit along the way in figuring out what he wants to do.

Not a bad kid by any means honestly some kids just don't have the guidance they need at that age. The talent is there.

There are shades of gray on this stuff, but Tate doesn't even say "according to _____" - he just states Tilmon privately committed to Missouri.

Not only Mark Smith 40 years ago today but Fred Miller 50 years ago today.

Smith's sophomore year team at Richwoods was unbelievable. Chris Williams (sr), Derek Holcomb (jr) and Smith (soph) were a great trio. Williams badly sprained his ankle in the state semifinal game.

As the unofficial president of the unofficial Alonzo Verge Fan Club, this is a pretty sure bet. You don't have a year like he did and get named Chicago POY and not pick up a single new offer if schools thought there was even a chance they could squeeze him through the clearinghouse and admissions. Even the schools that are accustomed to getting high-risk academic kids through didn't offer, and as you say, the kid can really play.

I simply don't like the stealing the thunder from the kid, unless like I said the family gave him the okay to run.

I think we're confusing the word getting out that it's Illinois, with the actual announcement from Mark Smith that it's Illinois. Tate is simply saying "what the word on the streets of Edwardsville is", which may be 100% true. Will he actually announce for Illinois at 6pm today? That is a whole different question and things could change. We've seen it before. I don't think it's stealing the kids thunder to report this no more than all the crystal ball predictions saying Illinois is stealing his thunder. It's just publicizing what the author is hearing, just like every crystal ball predictor.

There is still the anticipation until the announcement is actually made, which we've been burned on before!

yeah this is right about the time I really got into Illini basketball as well, but Chubby Phillips and seeing the Chief at my first football game, was what really did it for me, as far as becoming an Illini fan.

Been on Loyalty for several years now and this is my first Chubby Phillips remembrance sighting. Love it.

But we need to get this over with. If we get Mark Smith can we refer to him on this board as Smitty please? I love the nickname Smitty. 'Course I'm with the guy who likes Walton and Dakich too. Don't judge me.

Cash35 would beg to differ with you. He had the scoop two days ago.
