Welp, Goodwin is picking up YUGGGEE offers

Blessed to receive a offer from Michigan State

I hate to admit that MSU is probably a perfect fit for Goodwin.

Someone alluded to the fact earlier that in the professional world recruits frequently lead a company/recruiter to believe that they're coming, only to back out at the last minute and take another offer. For perspective, I can tell you that I've done precisely that, and I consider myself a reliable, no-nonsense person when it comes to work.

At one point, I had two job offers on the table, accepted one provisionally (no paperwork, but verbal commitment), and when I informed the other company of my decision they dramatically increased the salary and benefits package, making it an offer I genuinely couldn't refuse. I'm generally a man of my word, but I had to renege. When you are sought after and the stakes are high, it becomes complicated. These recruits are dealing with a hugely difficult decision. I won't be surprised if someone like Tilmon goes to KU or UNC and it comes out later that he was torn because he grew up a huge UI fan and loved Groce, but decided a blue blood was a better business opportunity at the end of the day.

I see so few people that will admit this but it is 100% true. In the end you have to do what you think is best for you.

Aren't there like 9 centers in the top 30 of 2017 class? Seems like somewhat crowded field and most of these blue bloods are probably giving multiple offers.

True, but big men are so few and far between, that I feel every team in the top 30 has probably offered all 9 or has some sort of contact with them.

Thanks for your honesty FatGreg. When I do business dealings, I don't like my offer shopped around so I give them a short time window and when I see the offer being shopped around I step away. When I give my word that I would like to close on the deal I'm all in and try to make the process easy for all parties involved. A big part is professional reputation and wanting to get additional deals my way. There has been times when I backed out after we discovered that crucial information was hidden or lied about. But I don't recall backing out on one deal because a better deal became available.

Just heard Tilmon interview, seemed kind of laid back the whole time. I thought the most telling part was that he said Illinois was there the whole time even when "I was nothing". He said loyalty means a lot. He might just not commit until this season is over, why verbal (not sign) just to back out later due to coaching change.

By the way UNC was given additional notices regarding academic fraud in there BB and FB programs. I don't see how they can survive this without a post season ban and lost of scholarships. This is an institutional problem, picture perfect example of lack of institutional controls.

Men's hoops is not mentioned in UNC's new LOA, they are going to skate.

I agree that's how I and probably most of the fan base feel. My whole point is that we don't know if that's what Whitman is thinking.

We don't know what Whitman is thinking, but we've gotten a peek of how Whitman thinks.

And really, there's not a ton of variance in these things. 99% of AD's in Whitman's shoes would fire Groce with another tournament miss. This thing has run its course.

I think he needs to make the tourney OR put together a top 15ish recruiting class - not both.

I disagree on the recruiting aspect, but I just want to briefly make a second point which is that you should never, ever use class rankings in basketball. Because the number of scholarships different teams have to hand out is so variable, ranking the teams by individual years is totally, 100% meaningless.

Barring disaster we're almost certainly going to have a top 15 class even without Goodwin and Tilmon just because we have so many schollies to give out. A Top 15 class does not correlate with a Top 15 team in the linear way it does in football.

Couldn't help but notice Groce was the first coach mentioned by Goodwin in regards to who he has a great relationship with. Fingers crossed.
Yep..said he'll make his call after football season. Sounds like a great young man...really would love to see him in O & B.

Really gonna sting if Goodwin doesn't come to ILL. He's priority 1A right now. Tilmon 1B. IMO

Anyone think if Goodwin comes here it would help with T Finke as well?

Now imagine you are an 18 year old kid and not at least a somewhat older (5-6 years) young adult and you're being wooed by coaches you've idolized your whole life. Your mind might change a few times as the process plays out.

Agreed. Goodwin is neck and neck with Tilmon in priority IMO. If there was ever a way to factor intangibles into a recruits ranking, Goodwin is a 5 star player 8/7 days a week. Wherever he ends up, it's looking like he's going to be the cornerstone of a program. I can't remember the last time I was so flattered by a recruit.

Whitman gave Groce a silent verbal that if he makes the tourney next year he is retained for 2017-18.
