Michigan had a rough 10-12 year stretch from the end of Fisher through Elerbe, Amaker to beginning of Beilen.

Beilen first 3 seasons combined equaled to a sub .500 record. During this time Michigan would land good talent but it never had consistent winners. BU is going to have to lay the ground work for consistent NCAA teams. With all the changes in NCAA, NBA, developmental pro leagues I don't know what the secret sauce is.

We've missed out on a heck of a lot of players, for a long time but especially since this staff arrived

And what, John Groce didn’t out on a ton of players? Give me a break. BU hasn’t done any worse. I think Ayo will speak volumes, and is the best player we’ve landed in a long time.

Shannon picking DePaul doesn't automatically mean our staff dropped the ball. Some of you act like we have mind control over these players. They go where they wanna go. Just because its not Illinois doesn't mean our staff is failing. Illinois is a tough job. Some kids want the most exposure they can get, others wanna stay close to home. A few kids have state pride and want to wear the orange and blue. Bottomline, each recruit is different and its hard to draw conclusions if we miss out on a player.

DePaul is arguably the most insignificant P5+whatever program in the country. There’s a vanishingly small set of acceptable reasons we should lose a recruit we want to them.

This staff has also targeted and offered a whole lot more players.

True, which says something in and of itself don't you think? Look, I think we've got a good basketball coach and I'm all for being patient, but recruiting under this staff has to be a concern. The amount of offers we have out is absolutely nuts - and no commitments. None from top recruits, and none from the amorphous "one of BU's guys" standard that many on here apply.

I'm okay with them having a lot of offers out there. What I want to see is more earlier commits instead of having to scramble later in the game.
Especially now that they have more than a full year under their belt.

He’s had one full recruiting season and he got Ayo. Give the guy a break, it’s freakin August 12. Plenty of time and a plethora of offers out there. Let’s wait and see how this class ends up. I think we’ll all be pleasantly surprised.

And we've been such a shining example of success lately...

Yes, losing Shannon stings. With that said let's keep in mind recruiting isn't all about who you whiff on, it's about who you end up with. You could look at the Shannon situation and say this was an absolute head-scratching debacle losing a top 100 MIF player in our backyard. That's fair. It was equally strange when BU locked up Tevian Jones after 1 official visit. We didn't have any business locking up that recruitment so emphatically. Embrace the weirdness that is recruiting and appreciate who we end up with.

If a kid is from Chicago & wants to stay in Chicago how would that be BU's fault?

Very, very rarely will a big time recruit insist on staying close to home so strongly that they'll attend arguably the worst P5 program in the country to do so. At that point, you're talking about a serious case of preemptive homesickness or some personal reason that would compel a kid to stay home (like a sick family member).

It's the staff's job to convince the kid why Illinois is the right fit considering Chicago is only 2 hours away, and unlike DePaul, we have a program that cares about basketball, has a terrific campus and gameday atmosphere, and has a huge upside. There may be situations in which the staff can't overcome some other personal factor, but those situations tend to be the exception rather than the rule.

If he goes to DePaul over us, it basically just shows that he wants to stay close to home and doesn't see Illinois as enticing enough to justify a 2 hour drive. That's not a good look for us.

Likely easier path to minutes. DePaul has gained 2 Illini transfers in the last 4 years. Possibly seeing a log jam at the SG/SF spot.

Neither is a 4-14 big 10 record

Here's the orange Koolaid version:

Louisville and other high majors backed off due to his shot mechanics or other factors. He wants to stay near Chicago or his dad in FL. We backed off because we'll get Guerrier who might join the team this year instead of next.

MIF appreciates us keeping Shannon in the mix and will help us with Miller next year unless of course Kentucky or Duke or Kansas or UNC call. Maybe Louisville or another team as well. But they'll try.

Or maybe he just really likes DePaul? I mean, if I were the top recruit in the nation right now, and could go anywhere, I’d still choose Illinois. For no other reason than I simply LOVE Illinois.

Recruiting can sometimes be illogical.

I believe that should be in orange text.

Jerry Meyer with the lone Illinois CB. He better change it if he doesn’t want to get dinged on this one. Seems to obvious to not switch.
