Bit of a strange argument to be making when a kid from Lincoln Park High School chooses DePaul over us.

I'm all for taking a more national vantage point in recruiting, but there are resource allocation questions that go along with that, and in any event, the sheer man-hours issue means that we ought to be having better, earlier, more thorough evaluations of players close to us rather than far from us.

That's more a thing in football where State U ought to be finding a kid or two locally who others just don't have the out-of-state scouting resources to zoom in on (think a Jeff Allen or a Malik Turner), but certainly there is truth to that in basketball as well and Shannon was that kind of prospect. As were Mark Smith and Calvin Brock, to name a couple others we landed.
Well it's a strange argument if you base your arguments on anecdotes instead of a body of evidence.

Anyone else wonder if not hosting the state tournament anymore is hurting us?

Champaign businesses miss out on a lot of $$$$.......but I don't think in todays world that it affects recruiting all that much.....I doubt that Bradley's recruitment has had an upswing since the tourney arrived in Peoria.

The plural of anecdote is data
Well to some people. Which is why bad arguments get so much traction.

I wouldn't doubt that rutgers and st johns fans said similar stuff about griffin. Or cal and san diego state about tevian.

For those that don't want to play the video - Ohio St, Mizzou, UI, Wisconsin and K State

Have to wonder if that isn't the order of preference too? He certainly wouldn't say that it is, but seems to be the vibe that's been out there about his recruitment for awhile. Good news for us in general though that the traditional blue bloods aren't in on this one.

No, that's actually literally true and an important thing to understand.

And if we're going the direction of Rutgers and St. Johns basketball, well, that's rather giving the game away isn't it?

Two anecdotes don't make data. I can't believe any of us have to explain that cherry picking a couple of examples doesn't constitute a rational basis for making predictions or assessments

And of course you know my point about Griffin and you conveniently left out jones.

You never gave examples for these in state players we got in the past that came on strong late etc.

I hate to break it to you. These recruits don't think they way you'd like them to. Luckily Underwood has figured it out. Hopefully he'll figure out how to deal with it and achieve success.

This is all that matters, and remains very much to be seen.

I would say essentially laundering a payment directly to the Mac Irvin Fire with a large chunk of his assistant coaching budget offers rather compelling evidence to the contrary, personally.

I think what Underwood has figured out is that he can win games and be competitive without having top-tier recruiting classes. If over the next couple years we just get more competitive and actually have tournament quality teams again, that would be a great step. We don't have to win that many recruiting battles to do that. The next step, after winning games and demonstrating competence, would be securing committments from some of these elite recruits so you're not fighting for the bubble, but fighting for conference titles. We want to skip to the second stage which I would like as well, but isn't likely based on what we're seeing play out.

Well one thing is for sure about the Terrence Shannon recruitment...The staff tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end, it didn't even matter.

Sorry, I couldn't help it...I will show myself the door.
Does anyone think he might have seen Jones and Nichols ahead of him for 2 years?

What I think is that Underwood is learning on the job and feeling out what he has which is both understandable and wise. But hot damn the boat is taking on a lot of water in the meantime, and we would be in a better spot if we'd had a well scouted and vetted early commit or two in the last couple of classes. That is part and parcel of the kind of philosophy you're talking about.

You can argue that point all day long but its total speculation. We, as fans, do not know what Underwood is thinking with every single recruit. We offer different guys for different reasons. And there are times we target lower rated recruits if we have to (ie plan C or D options). To expect we land every top 100 player from the state of Illinois at this point is not realistic. I think you as a fan would feel better if we landed some early recruits. However because we haven't landed any doesn't mean that Underwood is working his !!! off to get those commits.

Illinois basketball recruiting in 2018 is seeing Liddell's list and my first thought being "Well, at KSU at least we won't have to face him."

Step off the ledge, friend. We snagged some good recruits in 2018. Not to mention our highest rated recruit since Jereme Richmond committed last fall. Missing out on Whitney to Kentucky stings, and Shannon to Depaul hurts no doubt but we are OK.

Ya'll do realize that the last time we made the tournament, this years class was in 7th grade right?

I know this board is full of people who due to their age feel like 5 years isn't an eternity but for a kid going to college next year, its pretty much like we've never been in the tourney at all. Hell, last time we went to the tourney I was a senior in HS ready to go to UI and it still almost feels like a past life. THIS IS AN UPHILL CLIMB! The fact that we got Ayo and Tevian is kind of a minor miracle in of itself. Its going to be tough but we simply have to win (Chicken or egg, I know) before we are going to feel like we expect to snag Top 100 recruits, instate or otherwise.

We have a large class but only 2 four star players. I expect Jones and Ayo to be good but we don't know for sure how the others will fare. Ranking wise, the others are average to below average B1G recruits but we always tend to have the mentality that all our 2 or 3 star guys are diamonds in the rough.

It certainly doesn't help but keep in mind that Kruger, Self and Weber have been Illinois coaches since the move to Peoria and they had a lot of success at Illinois.

Pushing for Whitney and Cockburn indicates otherwise.

What I think is that Underwood is learning on the job and feeling out what he has which is both understandable and wise. But hot damn the boat is taking on a lot of water in the meantime, and we would be in a better spot if we'd had a well scouted and vetted early commit or two in the last couple of classes. I don't think it makes sense not to recruit any top-tier players because you know the likelihood of landing them is lower than say at Michigan State. You have to be smart about it and you can't put all of your eggs into that basket, etc. but you citing that as evidence of not knowing what's going on is misplaced.

Also, don't forget we were one of the first to offer Shannon, he just happened to blow up.

It does sting losing Shannon, but as bad as they've been, DePaul does have a decent sell at this point. City school, brand new arena. And even though they are a door mat, Big East is probably equal to or a better basketball conference than the BIG right now. I could see the appeal of trying to rebuild a team in that conference, in a major market, in brand new arena, esp. if it was my home city.
