“They support me and make sure that I’m good,” he said. “They check up on me a lot and put in a lot of effort. So I’m going to return the favor.” - Cockburn on FSU and Illinois
That's what really sticks out to me. It seems like he feels obligated to visit us instead of actually wanting to

We see recruits do this a lot...courtesy visits. And I just can't understand. If you like and respect a staff so much, then it's not a courtesy to have them waste their time convincing you of something you can't be convinced on. Just respectfully let them know you won't be committing and both parties can easily move one. I guess on the other hand they are technically giving that staff a chance and maybe they get blown away on the visit and change their mind. I feel like 99% of the time that doesn't happen though.

I'm certainly not saying the sky is falling, but other than Ayo we have clearly missed repeatedly on top targets. Fortunately it appears there have been enough backup plans to field a competitive team. I don't see a team that will compete for B10 titles so far. There are still chances, but the two most recent were projected to be strong Illinois prospects. You can pretend we didn't need them or you can face reality that losing them hurts.
there is not one player that we "need". we have open and thin positions and want the best possible talent. All that said...most recruiting losses "hurt". some more than others.

Losing a recruit to DePaul is an enormous step in the wrong direction.

OK? There were people on here talking about how Illinois would get the right of first refusal on MIF kids after the THT incident. We didn't even get a chance to have an official with Shannon. That's a pretty crappy deal if you ask me.

That's because it wasn't a deal at all and the THT thing had nothing to do with MIF. I agree it sucks that we didn't seem to get a good run at Shannon given our connections there, but continuously bringing up THT each time we miss a MIF guy is just silly.

No it's not. Neither is losing a recruit who wants to walk on at Missouri. You should have confidence in the house that BU is building and...try out these orange glasses I'm wearing sometime.

In fairness, and without using orange tinted glasses, I really do think losing said recruit to Mizzou as a walk-on there is absolutely no big deal. That was clearly a plan Q situation, and to be honest, he seemed like the sort of kid that might pan out but would more likely end up having someone recruited over him. He probably figured it was better to be a legacy while likely not playing.

It certainly isn't inspiring language, but I figure if you get a chance to get a guy like him on campus, you do it and see if you can give him a bit of a surprisingly good showing that flips him.

Underwood's tenure might be the worst recruiting stretch I've ever seen at Illinois. We've been low before and Ayo was a great get, but other than him, our misses are absolutely stunning. The programs we're getting turned down for and the playing time we have available it doesn't add up. BU must be an absolutely horrid recruiter. There is really no other explanation. Which is exactly what we were afraid of when we hired him

Or, you know, we have a historically weak brand to sell on top of the fact that 17 and 18 year olds have a complicated list of factors that go into their decisions.

Or we waste yet another OV on a player who realistically isn't going to come here.

We tend to obsess over the misses on this forum. But we shouldn't forget he beat out KY for the state's Mr. Basketball, and brought in a USA basketball gold medalist.

You must not have been around for the first half of Weber's tenure.

Please, everyone, keep this in your hip pocket and use it.... hopefully at the end of this year....but without a doubt at the end of 2019. Underwood will get us there and there will be plenty of crow to eat for all.

Unfortunately, there are more people who have regularly eaten crow in the last 15 years for saying similar to what you are claiming rather than the other way around.

As even our own basketball history proves, to be consistently good and contenders, you need the talent. So as I have said many times, to have success at Illinois, a coach needs to be a very good recruiter. BU needs to turn it around, but reality is that so far he has not shown that recruiting acumen yet. The rest is blind hope that we will outsystem and outdevelop the rest of B10 and top national programs with some kind of magic recruiting "strategy" that finds lesser ranked players who consistently surprise on the court.

The fact that we are so desperate to offer scholarships to plan Q recruits should be alarming by itself.

Lmao. BU's been here a shade over a year. Some of us are like abused animals. We jump at the slightest bit of noise.

Pretty sure we won't be winning another game until Underwood is replaced. Grab a Snickers.

Based on those quotes, that looks to be the case exactly. Courtesy visit. Nothing more....just hope somehow someway we can change that mentality. Though I'm not the least bit hopeful.

So Underwood should go after great recruits and do whatever is necessary...but eh don’t waste an official visit to a recruit who could end up gaining interest and loving it....which is exactly what an official visit is intended on doing
