If one of the other big recruits is serviceable, the roster seems well balanced and competitive. But BU must win with this team or his credibility takes a hit with both fans and recruits. Win and how many offers were rejected doesn't seem too important, when he signed the recruits doesn't seem important, and the ratings of the recruits doesn't seem important. Lose and his recruiting and coaching suck!

1. It is no secret that BUs style isn't for everyone.
2. I know BU doesn't like the facilities they have.(minus SFC)
3. Most of the time the politics thing comes down to how bad we have been lately.
4. The staff is always adjusting when it comes to recruiting. I mean not much they can do once a kid commits somewhere else just move on the the next option.

Unless your name is Clownzo.

I can appreciate everyone going back and forth on BU his tactics, the recruits we have lost vs the ones that we have gotten....the reality is as we all know or should know is winning will solve alot of issues. This year is a "must" produce year, for the staff and future of recruiting, as the 2021-2022 classes will need alot of players overall...even with this years class and next. If we do not win now with the scheme, the coaching rumors, the etc etc etc....we may be really scrambling 2 years from now!

Huh? GB breaking the freshman record? Ayo? Trent? are all proven players to a team that beat MD on neutral court and MSU at home and came within spitting distance of the Zags. The 12 game wins of course must be taken in context with a very young team and a very tough schedule. Our 12 win season last year was much better than the previous season when you look in context of more than just W/L.

Quick question - what is your definition of "Major Contributor" and just how many of those do you think any one team can have?

People like this only look at Ws and Ls. Nothing else matters. They probably can’t evaluate talent, or maybe even understand the rules of the game. There’s no chance they can predict which teams will be good next season or be able to articulate what pieces a team is missing that could push them to the next level.

I'm not an everybody gets a trophy kind of guy. I don't find rays of sunshine in a 20+ loss season.

You're 100% right. I cannot predict what will occur next season. There is no way of knowing what the result will be. You can't get upset when "people like this" don't share the same feeling about what we have. We can point/counterpoint this thing to death. It comes down to you feeling like recruiting has gone well and will blossom vs others who believe it is sub par and the results will continue to demonstrate that.

Nobody will know anything until mid January.
I am the furthest thing from 'everyone gets a trophy' (just ask the disappointed parents of the kids I coached). And to try to minimalize those who look at a team's talent and growth and age etc. to just blind rah rah fans is a nice try, but a classic fail argument/dismissal.

Of course W/Ls matter - but there is so much more to looking at a body of work and growth from year to year than just pure W/L when you are rebuilding from a broken team/system. But as you state, opinions differ - some saw growth, wins we couldn't get the year before and a team of mostly underclassmen now getting a year older. My focus is on the bigger picture, your focus is on W/L - to each his or her own.

Yeah, rebuilding from a broken team/system must be rough. Good thing BU inherited a deep and experienced roster coming off a season much better than he's replicated since.

As a millennial who received many a participation trophy growing up, may I point something out? Not one kid ever has received a trophy just for turning up at soccer practice and mistaken it for an actual achievement. That junk was meant to assuage the status anxiety of our baby boomer parents and every one of us knew it.

It has been my experience in the workplace that the new generation is more desirous of positive reinforcement and emotional support, that much is true. But participation trophies has always struck me as the weirdest most incorrect analogy for that phenomenon.

You keep saying recruiting is way down... If you really feel that way then what's your response to what I wrote previously where by the numbers Illinois is recruiting better than 9 of the other 13 schools in the Big 10? https://www.illinoisloyalty.com/For...-recruiting-thread.25030/page-10#post-1474130

I'll take a stab at this. Not to denigrate anyone, but simply to put some perspective on our classes. Ultimately, losing records means you're short on talent, which is where we've been.

Here's our last 3 class rankings, within the conference, by 247 composite.

2019 - 10th (based on Kofi, Kouma, and BBV). We're losing Kouma and getting a couple transfers.
2018 - 5th (huge 7 man class. Higgs and Kane are gone). Ayo will be gone after this season.
2017 - 2nd (based on a 5 man class of Mark Smith, Matic, Spicy, DMW, and Trent). 2 remain.

I'm thrilled if we get players who go pro, but it means you have to refill the cupboard much faster.

Like most, I don't care who we recruit if it brings us back to the top-25 and puts in the dance regularly. On paper, we have a pretty mixed bag. I certainly don't believe we've recruited better than Michigan, MSU, Maryland, tOSU, Indiana, or Purdue.

Why are you arguing for Underwood’s recruiting ability by showing the class rankings and then undercutting it by saying you don’t think it’s actually been that good?
