Cal isn’t a terrible X and O guy but what’s he really good at? Managing egos.....and he just happened to recruit and coach AD.
I actually think Cal was too much of an X and O guy before and during his time in the NBA. He became much more of a managed egos and player coach in his return to College Hoops. My guess is he learned a lot from his time in the league. And let's be real, coaching a Lakers led Lebron team is much better than the nets job of the late 90s .

247 updated its 2020 rankings, but Illinois is in on too many prospects to list. The below picture shows the before/afters for all players UI is recruiting in the class. Andre Curbelo & Nimari Burnett among the big risers.pic.twitter.com/DsQsk2TQrT

Best options to fill out the 2019 class? I'm thinking Patterson (assuming re-class), then Brown, then Whitney in a distant third due to his current commitment to UK.

With Giorgi and Kofi our primary with January and Samba as backup barring any additional bigs (more the merrier), and if Kipper is back who knows, I still think with our offense sets, we would be just fine next year.

If Giorgi keeps advancing no reason he won't, and Kofi starts getting in serious shape, they will eat up the mass minutes inside with January probably spelling both and Samba getting a few as well. Kane stays, Higgs is redshirt, medical and probably a transfer, Nichols I think stays to avoid another move if nothing else and takes over for the intangibles like AJ this year. With our guards, we are good.

Ayo, Frazier, Feliz,
Williams, Jones, Griffin, ??? (player to be named soon)
Nichols, Giorgi, Kofi, Kane, January inside/out types.
Last night was an example of us having three PG's and we used a walk on for a few minutes because of foul problems and an injury. With a real possibility of losing Ayo as well as Dre after next season I still would like to see a PG in 19. Losing those two for 52 mins a game is major. Even if we get Miller we need a third and having one in each class is nice balance. We got killed in the JG years without one and much more critical in BU system which depends on ball pressure.

Any more word on what's going on with Whitney?

He's still committed to UK and planning to sign in a couple months. Other than that, it's all speculation about what could/will happen if certain dominoes fall into place regarding Calimari, current players on UK's roster, and other wings that UK is still actively recruiting.

I'm guessing it's one of those fall-back offers that we've given him verbally if we don't land any higher priority targets. The "reverse silent verbal," if you will.
Decision date pending - He has to wait till IL tells him

“He’s playing in one of the best conferences in America. I have tremendous respect for Coach Underwood and how he holds his guys accountable,” Adrian Griffin said. “I respect coaching so much, and I see what he’s doing for these young men. Turning boys into men is not easy. Nowadays, with social media and everything else and all the distractions, there’s a lot of voices out there. But you can’t skip the steps. And I see improvement from Game 1 to where (Alan) is now.”

That's a coach understanding the process of player development and not a DAD talking.

Underwood was in Charlotte watching Brown and Kofi during some tournament tied into the NBA All Star weekend. It's being held at Johnson C. Smith College. Brown cut his dreadlocks, hardly recognized him.
Uh oh. Going mainstream. 😉

Yup, but not as tight as with Nimari.

In a perfect world, we have a great season next year. Top 4 in the B1G, sweet 16 or maybe elite 8 run, but we’re not quite elite. Ayo decides to stay one more year and bring Miller and/or Burnett down to win a natty and put his name in the rafters as one of the greatest Illini of all time.

Imagine a roster of...

SR: Frazier, Damonte
Jr: Ayo, Giorgi, Tev, Griffin
SO: Kofi, Brown
FR: Miller, Burnett, “sharpshooter”, “PF/C”

I like Kasubke’s game. He could be the sharpshooter we need. I believe he’s the one who’s dad is a big Illini fan.
