Oh man, Jay Shidler! That name brings back memories. I played on the University High B-ball team '74, '75, and '76 (Urbana - not the Bloomington/Normal team that was actually good :-0) and about the only perk was getting free tickets to the IHSA tournament at the Hall. Shidler put on quite a shooting clinic. I had to go back and find an article to confirm the numbers, and even after too much water under the bridge, I remembered correctly that he scored 48 in the semi's. My other favorite memory was watching a skinny Jack Sikma play for St. Anne. He was a one-man band, taking the rebounds and dribbling the length of the court to score.

"Jay Shidler became a rock star in 1976. The Lawrenceville senior scored a then record 157 points in four games to turn the Class A finals into a personal Woodstock. No one else on his team scored more than 28 points. On the final Saturday, he scored 48 in a semifinal loss to Oneida ROVA in the afternoon [note: out of a total of 70 points], then came back at night to score 45 in a consolation victory over Buda Western [out of a total of 65 points]. In a 29-2 season, Shidler averaged 32.7 points"

Did I hear that the state tournament is returning to its' rightful place in Champaign?
Ha! I was in middle school then, but my sister was a cheerleader for that Buda Western team. I remember the blonde bomber well...

Joel Goodson

respect my decision™
Someone tell me we have a good shot at Podziemski. He's criminally underrated, IMO.

Would that have been a ROVA team that may have played Alwood? I didn’t grow up in that area, but my parents are from there.
Yep they are right next door to each other. The two schools coop-ed sports together for several years in the early 2000’s before forming different alliances in recent years.

Have a lot of ground to cover in that one - trailing really hard right now.
0440 are you hearing anything on Casey? I haven't heard anything from you lately, hope you are feeling ok, also I heard beet juice helps most things.

My dad graduated from Alwood in the 80’s and I think my cousin was the QB for AROVA when they were combined. I remember coming up to watch one of their playoff games.

I love Podziemskis game. He would be right up there with Burnett as #1 priority. I feel like I’m watching a younger Goran Dragic every time I see a highlight video. It’s crazy how similar their shot and floater games are.

It was actually ROWVA. Can't forget about the bustling metropolis of Wataga

If you have to go back 30 years and 4 coaches ago, never might as well apply.
So, you all have now made up a new definition for the word "never". Incredible arrogance!! KN is in the NBA. That means that he must have been a top guy in some form or fashion. We also picked up a kid from there who, at the time, was named the Chicago Player of the Year. These alternative facts blow me away!

He would shoot from anywhere on the court. Imagine how much he would have scored with the 3-point shot!
That's true. As soon as he crossed the IHSA logo at mid-court, the ball was going up.

Thanks for the memories! I was on that ROVA team. (Not on the court. Lol)
So you got a much closer look at the blonde bomber! Our seats were some where up in the rafters of section C. I guess that's what happens when you're winless.

You two are the same vintage as I. Our team was never really competitive, so I don't have many vivid memories of the state tournaments except the 1973 Kaneland team (and Thornridge of course). Kaneland played the four corner offense and, since it was before the shot clock, most of their games were in the 40s. Was the most deliberate basketball I have ever seen, but it got them to the finals.
Thornridge = Quinn Buckner. He was a man among boys. Quincy and Bruce Douglas were another favorite team. Jim Brewer and Proviso East = beast. A quick Wikipedia reminded me they won 4 straight state championships. Back then, the IHSA state tournament was bigger than March Madness, at least if you lived in central Illinois. And the Illini were pretty mediocre until Lou came to town.

If he is anything close to the Dragon, sign him up! At least a couple years ago, it wasn't a successful game for Goran if he didn't lose a tooth. One of the more under-appreciated PGs in the NBA. [It has been easy to adopt the Heat lately with the most ex-Illini players in the league. Plus Tyler Herro.]

We have an exponentially better shot at a guy like Podz than AJ Casey. Recruiting is fluid but we might be the leader for Podz right now (who I think is the better college prospect TBH).
Love this kid and reading this article seems like he had great AAU/ HS coach/development. I'm sure Cal is selling him on the Tyler Herro path from Wisconsin underrated recruit to NBA.

If we're able to beat the blue bloods and local state programs, I'd be floored. I'm not going to hold me breath though.

Having attended the first 3 state finals in the Assembly Hall, I can attest to the fact that today's state finals offer considerably less in attendance and enthusiasm as those events. Much like an Illini game back in '05 when playing Indiana or Michigan State. Won by Carver (Anthony Smedley!!!), Pekin (Dave Golden), and Collinsville (Dennis Pace).

I hope returning to SFC will result in similar type experiences, but a Final Four rather than an Elite Eight will likely cut down on attendance, especially for smaller classes. We will have to see how teams not competing show up to watch. We had 12 tickets every year.
