I’m not sure we have much choice but, to take on another project big. There aren’t that many ready to contribute freshman bigs to begin with and we have shown no sign of being able to attract one to our program. If we don’t get some more bigs in the program and start working with them we will forever be lamenting our lack of big guys.
5th year transfer and/Or juco

Ebo is a project big, that is looking pretty good right now. Like I said before, not getting project bigs 2-3 years ago hurting us now. Going to be tough to land transfer big, there just isn't many to be had. Hopefully can land Herrard from MSU.

If you made an album of worst posts in the history of this forum, this one just might make the cover.

This was the best start to a post that I've read in some time.
Literally didn't get back off the floor to read the rest for 2 minutes :thumb:
And then, when I did get back up, solid stuff.
But GREAT intro.

I don't like the immediate eligibility for transfers. I do like the grad transfer rule though. Imagine trying to build a program when you have players that can leave any year without penalty. The recruitment process would never end. You would also have players leaving midseason, like Harris did to Missouri. Bad idea.

I don't like the proposed immediate eligibility for transfers, or the present grad transfer rule.

Disagree with their assessment. I think he's a whale of a coach. He wasn't that great of a recruiter until he got to Maryland and had the full force of UA behind him (relative cool factor not imply he's dirty).

Maryland apparently recruits big time out of the U.S. Watching their game this past week it seemed like half of their players are from various other countries outside of the U.S.

Agreed you really need at least one big in the pipeline at all times to make sure you have some consistency. At least every other year take a project big to develop. That way you always have one of those experienced upperclassmen that always seems to hurt us so often.

Get your point and it makes a lot of sense.
Getting technical with this question, but couldn't he enroll at UI a few days late and still be good to go in 2019?

In other words, would he really have to decide in 2 days to be ours, or could this drag out a little longer and still be ok?

And if they make the gpa cutoff like 3.25 or something, how big you think that pool is gonna be, besides every athlete at unc?

Thanks, I was going to point out this exact same thing. Let's face it. Most D1 players aren't getting Engineering degrees and likely do just enough to keep their GPA wherever it needs to be to stay eligible. And if someone is doing whatever it takes to keep their GPA above whatever the cutoff is going to be, then they deserve to have the right to transfer in my book. There has to be a standard set, and I agree that the GPA is the correct route to go. This is COLLEGE basketball, after all, isn't it?

I don't like the proposed immediate eligibility for transfers, or the present grad transfer rule.

Me neither, I do not like either one.

The first will totally destroy the balance of power towards the top basketball schools and really kill revenue in smaller Div. I schools. I would be surprised if it passes.

The grad transfer rule is a farce in its present form. NCAA data shows that graduate transfers have lower graduation rates and are simply making a basketball decision. If you really want to reward academics, let them transfer like regular transfers, sit out a year and give them an extra year of eligibility. Thus they will have 2 years to complete the degree (as most masters take more than a year) and also play out their eligibility. And get rid of the stupid provisions that you have to transfer to a school with a major not available in your school, where players try to find a strange major that they have no interest in, just to play basketball.

I'm with you on the grad transfer rules. They are a farce.

On the other, I'm not so sure. It bugs me that the coaches come and go, but the students who made a decision to play for that coach have to pay a one year penalty to move along.

In contrast, I see men like AJ who could have moved on, but who have seen it through and are clearly benefitting from being with a program for enough time to improve and get meaningful minutes. I'm really proud of AJ and look at potential transfer rules through his eyes, as I think he has done himself and his school proud.

I am okay with an immediately transfer rule if it's tied to the players GPA. That will cut down the numbers significantly but still allow it for those players who prove that school isn't just a means to play ball.

The grad transfer rule, I don't know, yes, it's sort of a farce as it stands. BUT, these guys already have a degree. So what can you do at that point? Yes, l agree, let there be no restrictions. They have their degree, they've gotten their 'education' (NC excepted), reward them with a year to perhaps pursue a Professional Basketball career! Heck, all schools should start a 1 year graduate degree in 'The Pursuing a Professional Sports Career' !!!

Totally agree!

I don't mind the immediate transfer rule. I think it will work both ways. Yes, some smaller schools may lose some players to the high majors if they have a player that is a break out talent. But they'll also get the guys that aren't getting the playing time they want at the high major as well. I would think it would be a wash.

Obviously nobody really knows what would happen, and I could see a lot of different scenarios playing out, but I think the likely end game here is that it would be just plain bad for college bb.

I think the number of transfers would at least double. Maybe not right away but a few years down the road. Offseason would become much more chaotic.

Lots of other, better options besides a sweeping permit to transfer whenever without penalty. I'd propose some sort of transfer window, maybe between March and May, where kids could transfer freely. Penalty for transfers outside that window would be the same as now. I get this is basically what happens now just with a complete freedom for a few months, but I think there has to be some sort of constrain.

IIRC, there was an extensive discussion on this board during the off-season about the merits and shortcomings of immediate transfers. I think one of the consensuses (consensi?) was that it would be a seismic shift for CBB that would change the sport forever, but that the NCAA probably owes it to the student-athletes.

A popular dissenting opinion was that student-athletes are already getting an incredible value for a full-ride scholarship in that they leave school with a degree, and that the NCAA owes student-athletes nothing.

One of the intriguing compromise stipulations IL posters came up with was only letting student-athletes transfer immediately if they had completed two full seasons with their first school.

It was one of our better off-season discussions.

I don't think you can say that students with good gpa can transfer only during their academic season.

Or do you mean that you declare your intent, but finish out the semester where you are? Wasn't sure.

We're going after Herard and JUCO guys Alok and Trice. Going all on in 2019 for Okoro

Has there been any news/update about this? I haven't seen this name mentioned anywhere. Would not be upset if true as he is rated the top JUCO recruit and his highlight video looks nice

We haven't offered. He's been scoured. I think it was Antigua was at the game. No offer was made but there is time. Ryan Evan mentioned it on his Periscope

For some reason, I think the ILLINI come out on top for Flo Thamba?

He seems like a Baylor type, but I think with Ayo, we get him!
