I think the biggest issue with this team is that the personnel don't fit the system well at all. Underwood's offense works best with long athletes who can get to the basket off the dribble and offensive rebound (shooting obviously also, but that's true for everyone). Right now, our roster is too reliant on combo guys aren't great at getting to the basket, and finesse bigs that aren't great rebounders.

I think we can all see that Underwood is working to correct those holes in the roster and add athletic wings and glass-cleaners. But guess what, everyone wants athletic wings and glass-cleaners. We're not recruiting from a position of national relevance anymore. These kids don't remember Dee and Deron.
They were barely alive. For most of our targets, we're selling the chance for early playing-time in a good conference, not the chance to join a winning program that will guarantee you visibility on the national stage and a straight-line to the NBA.

Totally agree. Our current roster doesn't match the system at all. Even though they're not highly touted or polished, I think adding Jacobs and Trice to this class is important because they directly address major needs. Ayo is the guy who gets to the rim & adds much needed offense. Jacobs is that athletic wing & Trice is the athletic glass cleaner you mentioned.

I know rankings aren't everything, but count me as a little less excited about this... Especially with the quality of schools that are taking kids number 40-100 on this list

I just have a tough time believing that our players are worse than SFA and OSU.

I have a hard time believing it, too. But it's absolutely true.

Imagine a draft whereby all B10 coaches could select their teams from the entire pool of B10 players. How many rounds would we see before the first Illinois player was picked? How many would be picked in the first 10 rounds? Two? Black and Frazier would obviously come off the board before anyone else. Where the heck would the rest of the roster go? Last two rounds?

Our issue is not that we have bad players. The problem is that we have NO players to fill certain rolls. It simply doesn't matter how good the others are if we have gaping holes in some areas. Teams with below average bigs give us fits because we have NO bigs.

Their attitude certainly is.

I don't know where this comes from. I have not seen a lack of effort. They have a set of abilities that was recruited and praised during the initial practices. If a coach can not not utilize and build their confidence to play his system there is not just one at fault. This is a two way street and if the locker room is bad I blame the coach for not fixing it. When you are competitive in the first half and not in the second just maybe the other coach may adaptions and you have been out coached.

That and we're relying on freshmen. It's why I'm not despairing about next season just yet. Smith, Williams and Ebo will all be better. Frazier will improve, too. Add Ayo and a couple other guys the staff are in on late and maybe we win 20+ next year.

Right?

I thought I read on another board that Walker actually visited him recently?

I know Illinois has followed him, no offer as of yet to my knowledge, however, this kid was a player in HS, has been putting up double doubles all year, and would literally jump out of the gym...40 + vertical. 15+ pts and 9 + reb as of December.

His offer list is pretty good, not sure our hold up or his interest?

https://twitter.com/coach_blaylock?lang=en, check out where he is when he catches the alley oop, scroll down.

Xavier has offered, they are in a better place than we are right now on almost every level?

I say we bring in #1, #15, and #16 on that list and call it good.

I searched #15 earlier today. Seemed like a lot of personal issues. Has bounced through a couple of schools. Was briefly at Memphis before the school he is currently listed at.

Sources: Top prospect with ties to federal basketball corruption probe will commit to Villanova
https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-to...nerly-commit-villanova-222316093.html?src=rss

Villanova is not allowed to comment on Quinerly, per NCAA rules that would apply to any recruit who hasn’t yet signed a letter of intent. (The school can only acknowledge that it is recruiting him, and can comment after he signs in the period that begins April 11.) His case will be followed closely in college basketball circles, as the players at Louisville (Brian Bowen), Auburn (Austin Wiley and Danjel Purifoy) and USC (De’Anthony Melton) with direct ties to the case have not yet played for their schools this season. (Bowen has since transferred to South Carolina.)

“There’s a chance these guys may never play,” said a high-ranking collegiate official familiar with the cases. “In some respects, the NCAA has to come to grips with what they want to be in these circumstances. Are there certain behaviors that [indicate], you should just move on?”

The combination of those remaining schools offering and his lack of a recruiting page on any of the major recruiting websites makes me think that Xavier offer is not commit-able (plus another lower-level recruiting website, Verbal Commits, is not listing them as an offer).

I just have a tough time believing that our players are worse than SFA and OSU.

They are not people just refuse to accept the fact that Underwood took over programs that had veteran guards which made it easier to install his system and then tried to take teh same approach here with a bunch of young guards and it simply hasnt worked .

He took over a SFA program that had 3 seniors, a junior, and sophomore as the top 5 players . That sophomore guard would lead the team the next 2 seasons Underwood was there.

He then jumped to OKC which had 2 seniors ,2 juniors, and a nba caliber sophomore pg .

The system will work I just think he took the worst possibly approach to implementing this year . At both previous stops he was able to play his top 3 guards 29-30 mpg but this year hes playing 5 guards 18 mpg and it's degraded the entire learning process and cohesion that is needed when executing the offense. You are not working with 5 identical players who all have the same skills and tendencies and that is much different than 3 guards who will get the bulk of the minutes and once you add in freshmen and transfer status it complicates matters even more ....Next year will be better

https://usf.rivals.com/news/bulls-in-season-recruiting-picks-up-steam USF, notes the Xavier offer among others. Regardless the kid was recruited out of HS as well and has talent and athleticism.:chief:

Hopefully with all of these offers out, the Illini can land some serviceable names. Though obviously it wouldn't be a bad thing, Illinois doesn't need a team full of five star players to win. Watching Virginia play last night, and I haven't went and checked to be sure, but there can't be many highly rated (top 50 or so) players on that team. Miami was vastly more athletic, but Virginia's patient play, and intelligent defensive play just neutralized everything Miami wanted to do. It wasn't exciting basketball, but it was still a W.

Just give me some winners on that floor. Some guys that can handle an a** chewing, and use it as motivation.

I'm tired of Illinois looking like Frederic Weis in the Olympics every time they take the floor. For those that don't know what that means, just Google "Vince Carter Olympic Dunk," and you'll see exactly what I mean. Haha.

Watched Okoro play last night in Mahomet. He is quite the physical specimen. Normal West won big but there were a few dunks and alley hoops he caught that no one on our current team could throw down. Matt Painter was in the house but no Illini coaches.

That's a 15-20 minute drive from campus. That would be pitiful if there really wasn't an Illini presence there.

Bloomington, Indiana is well within driving distance for an assistant coach to have drove over this morning.

Watched Chris Peyton in Bloomington last night against Lincoln. 6'7", slender. Explosive leaper, decent ball handler, very unselfish passer, good teammate, limited offensively. In 32 minutes on the court he never attempted a shot outside of 5 feet. Scored 13 against a small team.

I'd keep an eye on this guy if only because of his extreme athleticism. I remember Ken Norman early in his career, never attempted anything beyond a layup (although he was very good at that, hence the name "Snake"). Developed a well rounded offensive game and became a very good pro. Maybe this guy is capable of expanding his game. He's young.

In the game Payton played at Glenbard East, he was outstanding offensively. My brother came away very, very impressed.
