I see that Trice is averaging 13/12 at Wabash. If he even puts up 7/6 and some toughness at illinois that would be a great addition.

Only a 54% free throw shooter though

When Seattle Slim gets done with him he'll be at 90%:thumb:

I have a hard time getting excited over a 6'2" guard ranked 330 who can't shoot. Who's he going to be an upgrade over? Where would his playing time come from?

We lost to Michigan State because we were out-rebounded 37-15. We lost to Ohio State because we were out-rebounded 45-22. We lost to a mediocre Iowa team because we got beat up inside. We lost to a weak Wisconsin team because their post player chewed us up. I think it's obvious what we really need.

This isn't an either/or scenario.

We have a minimum of 3 scholarships to fill. We almost certainly will have more. We can get both Jacobs AND a pair of big guys. Getting Jacobs doesn't preclude us from getting a big.

We need help across the board. If you believe a kid can upgrade the roster, you take him.

I don't understand these repeated narratives that both Jacobs and Ayo can't shoot. All I can guess is that these posters have not seen either play. Ayo is a plus shooter and I have seen it with my own eyes. A bit streaky at times but he can fill it up and hit seven threes in a game earlier this year.

As for Jacobs, he is not a volume 3-pt shooter...true...but that is because slashing with his superb athletic ability is his preference. However, just look at the stats...Jacobs shot 48% from three and 81% from FT line as a senior at Uplift and 41% from three and 87% from FT line in his prep school year. This is not an absolute brick layer here.

I am not saying Jacobs is the best fit but shooting is not a huge concern for me with Jacobs and, yes, I have seen him live. However, he is shorter than both Ayo or Ramey so that is a concern as he is locked in at the 2-3 position only. He is a phenomenal athlete and would be a huge upgrade in that regard and the potential to be a lock-down defender.

As an aside, Ramey is the guy I want hands down over everybody remaining. He is a fantastic athlete, competitor, defender and teammate in a 6'4" body and could make both Ayo and Frazier that much more lethal. Also, I think people may be surprised how well Ayo can shoot considering the groupthink narratives and he has played off the ball some with Morgan Park.

They are not in the mix imo for Jacobs for a "shooting" guard, he would be the one with plays eventually curling off the pinch post for strong drive/finishes at the rim and or lobs at the rim with some jump shooting mixed in of course. Not to mention defensive stopper probably.

He has the skill set for that kind of offensive player in BU system. Quite frankly he might be the only one that could consistently be this player for us?
I like the fact that we have offered and probably will get him, add Ramey as a scorer, then!

Frazier/Smith/Ramey (hopefully) and Ayo would be more the scorers:chief:

Any other schools in the mix?
Nnnnno. Not at all.

That'll work.

Generally speaking, we want the kids who are in high demand. Fully understand that Jacobs seems to be a special circumstance. Given his athleticism and motor, he should be a good complementary player for us.

I agree, but I didn't see it as a negative. I saw it as him basically saying "It's over. Recruitment is shut down. I-L-L"

Has been noted that we need size, Trice fills that option, but offense would lack. All good here defense will always help the offense. With the commit from him, weknow what direction and whom we are going with.
We address shooting 100% after this. We need someone to make baskets, this has killed us all year, no perimeter shot at all with consistency. I think Ayo might surprise many with shooting, but that's not what we want from him. I see TF and him making a good tandem. Think TF will be able to be a Spot up shooter.

See maybe 1 transfer, if that. Could be very wrong. That would leave 2 spots, like a 6'6 wing and another big grad transfer, asking alot but with all team coming back, I think we will see a vast improvement over the team we have now. The experience they have gained will show. Ebo, MS and DMW will make major improvement. No faith in n Ramey coming here, take the best you can get and use it . Dreaming for these big time recruits are nice, but baby steps require time and guidance. ;):illinois:

I was talking with someone a couple days ago who has watched Trice several times at WVC and said the thing that impressed him the most was how well Trice moves his feet on defense and does a great job at not fouling.

Obvioulsy Jacobs isn't an elite recruit one year removed from HS and the only school on him is Illinois. More importantly, are his academics in order now?

According to articles last year he never made it to SIU b/c he didn't qualify academically:

"Hinson signed senior guard Demarius Jacobs out of Uplift High School in Chicago, one of the top players in the state, and prep school player Jeremy Roscoe. Jacobs, who teamed with Roscoe to win the 2A state title at Uplift in 2015, averaged 19.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game this season for a 22-5 squad. He (Jacobs), like Roscoe, was not academically eligible for a scholarship when they signed with SIU, but could make a big impact next season."

To nitpick, I believe that is Walker at the 3:35 mark, but plenty of Jacobs in there he is #3, Walker is #5.:chief:

Can we get a 2 fer? Walker is just a Sophomore, he's really good.

Marlon Taylor #17
Tremell Murphy #20

We have been linked to them as well. Pretty obvious the size of the 3 is what the staff is recruiting, although Taylor and Trice are completely different players. Taylor is known for freakish athleticism and can shoot the 3, while Trice is the inside good defensive double double player. Would be happy with both and think Trice announces today actually.

I just have to nitpick here. Black did literally this over Happ a few times in the Wisconsin game. His J is ridiculous.

I guess I should define shooting over them. Black is very good at hitting the fade away jumper and that is great. What he is unable to do the majority of the time is take anyone wrong to the basket. You want bigs that have that ability because (1) it is a better shot and (2) there is a great chance of drawing fouls.

Austin Trice will be visiting Illinois again tomorrow. For those keeping score, that’s the second visit for Trice inside a week. I’m not an insider, by I would be mildly surprised if he doesn’t give a commitment tomorrow.

In regards to Demarius Jacobs, he said he is interested in Illinois and will probably visit next week. He also said no one else is in the mix.

Trice in one week?

Wow, 1:09 of the first video, gathers the ball outside of the lane and immediately wants goes to dunk. Something we always seems to lack. Cleaning up with aggression.

Sure to be some rough edges that need to be smoothed out, but count me in.

Trice looks like he wants to hurt someone on his dunks...gotta like that. At least attitude wise, he and Jacobs are moving in the right direction.
