Unlike Groce I probably couldn't count and we'd have more scholarship players than the football team.

Haha well they say there a three types of people in this world. Those that can count, and those that can't

Question for the scholarship experts....if Thorne goes 6th year and the Aussie commits, does someone need to go off the current roster??

Froling: kid's a baller. Slightly better hands than Egwu. :)

Froling >>> Rako

Great game for him to see. Obviously, hope we land him. Hope he sees that AZ will recruit over him.

Twin sisters play at SMU. That could be a problem.

It was freezing here today. He wore a heavy coat most of the game. That could hurt.

On the positive side, he could see playing time out there.

Also wondering if Kendrick's change in life status could push him to chase a paycheck next year overseas.

I have no clue, and these guys are different as many of them are probably planning on doing this, but I can't even imagine thinking about moving overseas at the age of 20-22, especially with a newborn.

While I understand that Myers didn't need to worry about the degree as he was a lottery pick, I am thinking that Kendrick might want to make sure he picks one up on his way out. ;) They come in handy if things don't break your way. Does anyone know if the mother of his new son is also a student? If so what year in school she is.

I really enjoyed the piece the B1G network did on Juice when he was playing and had the daughter and how it affected him. Being a dad will surely have an affect on Kendrick.

Would it be totally bad form for Groce to ask Tracy to pay his way next year if he were granted a 6th year?

Reasoning is that Groce should recruit with the mindset that nothing is guaranteed, plus this class could really use two bigs. If (and this is a huge IF) Groce can land Raco and Froling, then he should definitely take them both which would put us at 14 for next year.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I would think that a kid that committed to you out of high school, who has put a lot of sweat equity in, who has had two horrible injuries would warrant the satisfaction of a coach and a University standing by his side.

Now then, if anyone pays their way next year, I would think it would probably be Alex Austin as the language behind the transfer should have been "we have room to accept you and will give you a scholarship when we can but we reserve the right to use it if a need becomes such"

To me, transfers are a little different and I could see Groce telling a transfer things that he wouldn't tell a high school kid whom he wants for 4 or more years.

Alex is already paying his own way. He's a walk on.

No way Tracy pays his own way. Nor should he.

Also with respect to the ongoing Rako saga, I suspect we're putting him on the back-burner, hoping Froling comes through. Rako has said he isn't going to make any recruiting decision until after the season. With that in mind, it makes sense for Groce to focus on Froling now (who is likely a better prospect) and leave Rako at arms length for a possible late run at him down the road.

Making a late run at Rako down the road isn't going to happen. He'll have other more significant suitors looking to make a late addition to their recruiting class at the end of the year. Especially if Rako continues playing quality basketball and getting along with others, putting on the right persona, etc. Think of some of these schools that see they will be losing someone to the NBA. Illinois doesn't have the pull to dive in at the last second and expect to get a top 100 guy. And if your home state school doesn't recruit you and puts you on the back burner or ignores you and then tries to swoop in late when other options dry up, I would not give them the time of day.

If Groce can get Froling, he would have gotten a class that will be a "glue class" and for that reason very underrated. A pg, defender and big... Just what we need for Nunn and Hill's senior season along with Black, JCL and the rest

Did we seriously just move from no one will accept a scholarship to who has to pay their own way in one game?
