Besides that, Chastain wants to go pre-law. We ask too much of our basketball players to have them concerned about getting a real degree. We expect them to be focused on basketball all the time. The kid is not our type.

I would get too focused on majors. First, many kids have done tough majors and played D1 sports. Mke Hopkins and McDonlad (? Center on football team, sorry if I butchered the name recall) were aeronautical engineers. PJ Bowman I believe is a doctor, so obviously he had to take a tough load.

Hey, remember when Corey Maggette wanted a strong architecture program? :D

Edit: sorry if I missed the sarcasm

C'mon Man, Everybody knows that when a kid is from a small high school and the opposition designs the entire defense to stop you, stats can be inflated.

Leroy is too close to Champaign, sort of like Tolono. A small school kid from those places will just be too intimidated by the BIG atmosphere in Champaign. West Lafayette is a lot better place for a small school kid.

Too intimidated? LeRoy is about 35 minutes away from Champaign and about 20 minutes away from Bloomington. It's like smack dab in the middle of both cities and I'm sure he's been to both and is used to their size.

How is West Lafayette better for small school kids? Please explain your reasoning behind your statement about this.

If he wants to go to pre-law, let him do what he wants to do. Always remember though, that it is possible he can change his major. Just look at JCL for example. He thought about going into business, but is majoring in community health instead.

Chastain is a very interesting prospect and one I would like to see Illinois go after. Illinois could use some more athleticism.

I didn't sense any sarcasm in his post. I actually think he means it. Sarcasm is easily detectable in person, than online. ;)

Brilliant sarcasm. Think Brian Cardinal.

Here is a question I have no answer to but maybe one of you do? Can a coach take a player with him on a home visit my example being Malcolm Hill with Coach Groce to Jordan Goodwins parents home? Since he is from the area and always has seemed like a standup guy maybe that would help convince his parents to take a chance on the program. I know this is probably not happening just didn't know if it was within the NCAA rules.

Only four coaches can be actively traveling to recruit at a time, although the entire staff is usually certified to become 'active'. Players can not travel to recruit.

Please help: I just watched a highlight reel for the Chastain kid from Leroy, and I don't understand why we aren't involved/recruiting him. I know it's just a highlight reel, but he looks very athletic, nice shot, plays hard...really looks like a player to me. What am I missing?

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

At this point I say Ef it and offer him. I get its not a position of need but Utah offered and that's good enough for me. It has all the makings of a feel good home town hero story when he leads us to the final four

Has Chastain played AAU at all? How did we never hear about him before now? Looks good. Has size, skill, and athleticism. Offer him. I think we'll have room.

He sat out last summer with a meniscus problem -- either torn or otherwise injured. Very Illini-ish.

Utah and 4 MVC schools are the biggest.

Not an Illinois level recruit.
Utah is good (a 3 seed in the tourney!) and are Pac12. There were a few MVC schools better than us. I wouldn't say he's below our level... especially considering he's in our backyard.

Found this video after watching some Marquise Walker videos after seeing that MOB tweet last night. Thought this was really cool.

Chastain instantly would become our best athlete

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Chastain has a great basketball build and length and for a guy his size is really able to move well. That being said, we already have guys that are more athletic, most notably Nunn. He looks like one of those kids that has tremendous upside as he has some great raw skills but doesn't appear to have been coached very well. The first step with him will be adding some muscle to his frame and teaching him how to play defense because defensive fundamentals were atrocious, and that fits our current roster pretty well.
