United Township, Tray Buchanan, AP 1st. Team Class 4. 6'1 true point guard. Class of 17 played soph at Simeon. Anyone know anything about him?

He is coached by Marcus Polite, a former UT star in the 90's and Eastern Illinois alum. UT has historically had a HORRIBLE program and Polite recently took the reins and got them to State in God knows how many how years. Really good stuff for QC basketball.

Some truth to this line of thinking, you get more exposure playing AAU in the summers but one only needs to look at Christian Williams from Decatur to see that most of us have no clue about true player potential. Most of the all knowing on here said he wasn't B1G material last year when some suggested we offer. He is not a true point guard bla bla bla. Well he earned minutes this season for Iowa as a freshman and will only get better. I think he was better than Tate and I am on record as thinking Tate would be better than he is. I don't believe you can dis qualify him whether he plays AAU or 1A. If JG is interested at all it would only take an UV and open gym game to see what potential he has. I would certainly be interested in knowing how he would holdup against our players now.

Earned his minutes? What stats indicate that he's a B1G player? I would still say that he's not high major material. "Better than Tate", lol..

Polite was replaced by Webber this year, he coached at moline and somewhere in Chicago and came back to Quad cities area this year. Imo a very good young coach

He was at the end of the bench most of the season but guess what he actually played in the NCAA. Lets see who was the better player 3 years from now.. Me I would take him over Tate and Lewis in a heartbeat.

Being better than those two doesn't automatically mean that he should have been offered.

Not good. I'm sure that bigger offers are coming and if that's what he is wanting he's gone. I was under the impression he wanted to play for Illinois, if he's excited about Indiana I'm doubting that he is genuine about wanting to play for the Illini. Indiana will have a much different season next year, but it will probably be too late by then.

With Yogi, Thomas Bryant, and perhaps OG Anunoby gone/going pro, that is a lot to replace. Especially Yogi... he is the heart and soul of that team and what makes their offense tick.

However, most of the HS seniors will be signed before the 2016-17 season kicks off and Indiana will be showing a team without those players. :tsk:

Indiana has higher priorities at the position than Goodwin. Purdue is the higher threat of his offers right now

I sure hope so, I think you could make a reasonable argument Kiwane is one of the 10 best players to wear the Illini uniform since the flying Illini left campus.
Easily. He's what the second all time scorer behind Deon and top 5 in assists? Not perfect metrics given guys leave early etc but that's awfully damn impressive.

Saw him at the UC last year he looked great-like he could step right on the court and play.

It's amazing to me that something or things that allegedly happened now will affect whether future recruits feel comfortable coming in two years. These guys won't even be playing with Tate and Nunn. If there was someone on campus attacking men's basketball players, I could see the fear. But, as long as they don't commit a crime, I don't know what the fear is. I don't think the fear is that John Groce made Nunn and Tate allegedly do this and that he will make these kids do the same thing.

If I were a recruit or his parents, I'd be worried that John Groce hasn't instilled a positive culture around the program, and as a result he may not even be around by the time they're on campus. It's bad enough he hasn't instilled a culture of winning, but what's happening off the court has to really be troubling.

The recruits believe that they will change the culture on the court, but the concern is with Groce's job security before they even step on campus. The off the court stuff is more concerning to fans than with recruits. Doesn't mean that they wouldn't commit to Illinois if Groce is let go, but it would be hard to build a relationship with all those guys if a new coach steps in. A LOI is meaningless now when a coach is fired so it's not just about getting them to sign.

Yeah, I see it better now. Their concern is Groce not being around. We have a fan base that wants him gone, a new AD, and probably not anybody with any substance standing in line to take his place if he is fired. I can see the uncertainty of the situation from the standpoint of the recruits.

I could be wrong on this but I think people are seriously overestimating the impact these arrests are going to have on recruiting. Of course prospects and parents are going to say they're concerned about it when asked a direct question but I highly doubt they think Champaign is some unsafe war zone or that their kids will become violent criminals if they come to school here.

Anyone who has been interviewed by a reporter knows how it works.

"Do these arrests in champaign cause you any concern?"

"Uh, I guess so"

Article: Goodwin said that he finds the recent legal issues "concerning."

In high school, I made it a point to never say yes or no when being interviewed because they always made me sound like an idiot. It may or may not be the truth, but still.

It will come down to the campus visit when mom/dad and player have a chance to sit down with Josh Whitman. They already know Coach Groce but the man that holds the cards is JW.

Exactly.

"Sure."

I know and I can hear it cracking as I type.

What was the count 50+ Illinois kids played in NCAA this year from IL and none on a team from IL? That speaks volumes for the quality of coaches and player assessment in the state.

It speaks volumes about the impact of having the state finals in Peoria instead of having the top kids dream of and then realize how cool it is to play in the unique awesome setting that is the Assembly Hall (SFC).

Just watched TJL's senior video mix. Nice. What I saw was a release on his jumper that rivals Melo Trimble's for Maryland. Very quick, very accurate.

Happy to have TJL, like most of what I see, and hope he recovers well from his injury. But not a big fan of his shot, because it's taken from out in front of him and off his forehead, rather than from overhead. The quickness and accuracy is good, but getting it off against quick, long B1G closeouts may be an issue. Still, having a 1 that has to be closed out on will be a huge upgrade to the O.

Player assessment. This is a huge part of the problem. I believe there is way too much emphasis on recruiting athletes versus basketball players. Illinois basketball is littered with top 100 recruits that have dramatically underachieved their rankings over the last decade. I will throw Damonte Williams in this mix. He looks the part and maybe by his Junior year he will be a contributor. Right now he is an athlete not a BIG 10 caliber basketball player.
Damone Williams isn't a B1G player but Christian Williams is.. This board has been giving me headaches lately.

If you think that we are recruiting too many athletes, then you must not have watched our team this year.

Where would you rank Illinois athletically in the Big 10? If Groce has been putting too much emphasis on recruiting athletes versus basketball players and these are the results than we are in even more trouble than we thought.

Dead wrong. Groce has targeted outstanding players. Frequently before the kids' blow up. The problem is he hasn't landed enough of them and has pretty much whiffed at PG (before TJL) and C.

Yep, player assessment has been outstanding, closing the deal on kids before they blow up has been tough. Just think of the guards alone he was in early on over the past few years that blew up and became top 40 players. Groce had evaluated and offered Alterique Gilbert, Jawun Evans, Prince Ali, and Brandone Francis before almost anyone else of note came in with their big offers.
