If Frasier is better than TJL I will be ecstatic. Highlights give you very few defensive looks and it seems the ratings are much heavier on offense. IMO TJL has had more affect on the defensive end of the floor than the offensive and he has made some great passes. If JG is still here and Frasier comes there will be a lot of 2PG played. Would love to see an offense that can score in transition but the future will depend on if all of the very strong offensive recruits can play equally good defense.

Just think how having two lead guards will open up the 3 point line for shooters like JCL, Finke and even Black with the ability to penetrate and kick.

From what I've seen, Frazier is more of a pure scorer than TJL. Hopefully that will help him play off the ball some next year.

Next year (and certainly the years following) are going to reflect a lot of really exciting guard play, but I worry about the next few years and interior recruiting. I'd love to see Groce (or whoever holds the reigns next year) give a guy like Fletch a chance to work with more Mav type guys. I think he was HUGE in the development of that kid.

I like TJL's game, but he does have some shortcomings. Not a particularly strong outside shooter and he's not a plus athlete who can elevate (as witnessed by the numerous times he got stuffed by Bridges attacking the basket), not the first time that's happened numerous times in the same game this season. Also, his FT shooting really needs to improve (not sure what Groce was thinking having him in at the end of the game instead of your best FT shooter in JCL???). Anyway, TJL is young and coming off an injury, so his best is yet to come.

Now, if we land Mark Smith, it gives us a true all-around guard, who can distribute, attack the basket with abandon using his 6-5/220 lb frame, and decimate teams with his deep shooting range. I'll stick to my nickname for him as "Jamal Murray-lite."

I actually prefer both Smith and Frazier to TJL. TJL sees the floor really well and I love his aggressiveness in going to the rim. Just wish he had a better outside stroke and more size and athleticism, but that's a minor quibble.

Best individual regional matchup
Jeremiah Tilmon vs. E.J. Liddell
This one will be fun as two of the state’s elite big men go bring their respective teams into this regional final.
Jeremiah Tilmon of East St. Louis, a 6-10 senior headed to Illinois, is the state’s No. 1 ranked prospect and among the top 35 in the country. Belleville West’s Liddell, a 6-6 sophomore, is among the City/Suburban Hoops Report’s top five prospects in Illinois in the Class of 2019.
Liddell is fresh off a monster performance in knocking off Illinois recruit Javon Pickett and Belleville East in the regional semifinals. Liddell scored 43 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked six shots. How productive has Liddell been in his young career? He’s already surpassed 1,000 career points.
Unfortunately, as of now it's not scheduled for The Cube, although you can check here tomorrow to see if it's been added.

Arew you saying that Smith is nt athletic??? He plays the point at 6'4ish, he throws a baseball 92-93 mph, he was the starting quarterback as a freshman...you really need to get a better look at Smith and he brutally strong by nature but if you watch Smith attack the basket it's rare you see him pick up charges...As for Smith outside jumper.... lolol ..NM an opinion poll ... "IF" Smith comes to Illinois he might get a "lil" time....

Uh, no he wasn't, actually. Nor was he talking about Smith's outside jumper. I know you're a friend of the family, but come on.

Frazier can definitely play off the ball, as he has most of this season. Wellington has two other point guard types that play major minutes. TF will do well off the ball, too.

My apologies...you know reading was not my major in college....Confusion 101 was.....sorry about that I totally missed the TJL at the front of that....

Spent many a semester in confusion 101 and I can say I'm right there with ya. Smith would rival MH for the best player here since Dee.

Dumb question maybe, but why is Mark Smith being talked about as the next Dee when he's rated as a 3/4 star? Does his lengthy offer list, length, and the fact that he's a point contribute to people's enthusiasm? Would love another good PG.

Watch him play and you'll have your answer.

Under most basketball scout's radar because until a few months ago was planning to play baseball in the SEC

2 PGs at once?! That will never work.

Btw... EJ Liddell is a solid 6'8" now. May even be 6'9".

Really want to see Smith and EHS line up against Simeon in the super.

Indeed. Liddell loves the Illini staff and we were his first offer. He and Tilmon alone starting up front would present us with a scoring, shot-blocking, rebounding duo that C-U hasn't seen in a looooong time.

It's difficult not salivating at a potential future Illini frontcourt with Tilmon, Liddell, Okoro, Nichols and Hargrove.

Combine that with a backcourt led by Smith, Frazier, TJL, DMW and Pickett.

Haven't even brought up Ayo Dosunmu or Tim Finke, our top '18 prospects.

Mercy!!

If even 3 out of that list of 5 '18 and '19 recruits are "realistic" commitments by retaining Groce at the helm, it seems like a no-brainer decision by Whitman.

Elmer Fudd could coach that squad to an Elite 8 appearance, minimally.

Regarding Finke: He absolutely loves Roger Powell. I heard that Vandy is in the lead because of that.

We need to get Roger back in Champaign.
