Believe shooting can be improved but also believe shots will be more contested in college. Having a good PG helps greatly.
Not trying to be a downer, just believe the freshmen are going tho have a hard time breaking into the lineup of Finke, Black, Nichols, JCL, and TJL. It will be absolutely great if they do. Hopefully their playing time increases as the season goes on in conference play and they are given some time in the early easier games.

Great comment

But you don't think Tilmon or Frazier could step in & play right away....Smiths not committed but I'd take Smith over Lucas in heartbeat....better shooter, passer, playmaker & finisher at the basket which is what the Illini need......right now Illinois has one guy that can create his own shot off the dribble (Hill) which is a problem at that level or any level....

I never put much stock into high school shooting %. There are many factors that affect it from bad shot selection to bad score keeping.
Speaking of shooting percentage, let's play a little game here. This guy committed to Illinois baseball a few years ago, and he was shooting over 40% from deep. Any guesses?

You may be surprised by who it is, and I'll give you a hint: He's not from Chicago, but he is from within state lines. I've seen him play several times in person, and he could flat-out stroke it.

Good luck!

Tilmon will get minutes immediately as no depth and his defensive ceiling very high but not expecting him to start immediately. Just been impressed by TJL's defense and passing. Looks to pass first and probably not as good as Smith or Frasier shooting but not Tate either.

While it's pretty easy to suggest a few outliers who improved in college, of all the predictors of future 3% shooting performance, I would bet anything that past 3% shooting performance is the most highly correlated predictor.

HS 3 pt % is a very good predictor of how well a kid will shoot in a HS game. If you are going to use it to try to project how they will shoot in a completely different environment 2-4 years later it will not be as strong of a predictor as you might expect. When you look at latent growth modeling for behavior over that long of a time period you there are a lot of factors that play into whether or not someone's ability is stable over time or whether it increases or decreases. The starting point (past 3 point shooting) is one of those factors. Other factors would be things like coaching, where they are shooting from on the floor, how open the shot is, whether it is off the bounce or set, whether their mechanics have improved, and changes in physical strength.

These kids are the focus of other team's defenses, often double and triple teamed, or facing gimmick defense. I'm not concerned with their 3pt% in an offense where they have freedom to chuck bad shots at will in games where they are usually leading by a lot. I wanna see how they shoot (or don't shoot) in tight games, or AAU games where both teams have talent and they are only being single teamed.

It's similar to suggesting Tilmon won't score much in college because his totals this year aren't eye popping. He's triple teamed all game and has a team of guards who can't shoot or get him the ball

Agree, also can be affected by good shooting teammates. I.e. Cannot double team if other 3 pt shooters. Very much affected by how open the shot.

You are exactly right. It's all about context.

Any word on Smith committing after his IU visit?? Was that visit an OV or UV??

Whoever our coach is next year he will have to play at least two freshmen from day one because we only have six players coming back. DJW is obviously transferring. Now that can change if we get a fifth year transfer.

Safe bet that there will be a 5th year transfer on the roster next season

Ok bigger body. Better shooter? Lucas shooting 40 % from floor and from 3. Better Passer?? Admittedly I haven't seen him pass the ball, that being said, He would have to be exceptional to be a better passer, Lucas is pretty high up there. Play maker? questionable only to the extent of what you are considering a play made? Personal play or play for a teammate. Finisher? Height and body go to Smith. Speed and defense right now sit with Lucas. As for who I want as far as point guard goes? with the limited film i have seen on Smith, my money is on Lucas in that matchup. But hey if I'm wrong I'll live with it because it means we are getting better. Long Live the Chief!!:chief:

Hey it's a personal opinion website...& like I said before Smith has a few Big 10 offers in lue of the Illini so maybe they will be teammates or competitors ... defensively & speed wise Lucas is not faster than Smith...but my opinion .... it is what it is...

I think the point is, we as message board posters are always quick to say recruit "x" is better than player "y," but it's very rarely the case except for with top25 mcdaa types. It is in no way a knock on mark, he's a terrific player and we'd all love to have him

I believe the style JG would like to play (and hopefully a new guy) will be a much faster run and shoot type with some defensive pressure liked he tried early in the season. WVA convinced him he didn't have the personnel for that style. In that type of game DJW is a great fit as he is much more athletic than LB IMO. The guy I don't see as a fit is AJ. It is difficult for me to judge the quickness of the recruits. Hopefully they have the speed and athletic ability to play that style. If so we may see a lot of them earlier than later. In any case, I am not saying they won't play, but probably won't be starters at the beginning of the season.

From what I am hearing... There is a very, very good chance Smith comes to U of I if Illinois makes tournament and Groce stays. Next 2 weeks are huge to what happens to this program.

Jevon Carter

Anyone ever hear of Jevon Carter from Proviso East? He is a JR at West Virginia, he is the leading scorer, ESPN just said the best defender Bob Huggins ever had, and he is all Big 12 Academic team, How do we miss a point guard like him?
