Not in basketball, and not for kids that have never played, and not when you've fired their coach.

We would get crucified, and we would give in.

Not to mention adorning persona non grata status in St. Louis recruiting.

So? You're just adding stipulations that do not matter when it comes to a LOI.

First it was "oh that doesn't happen in basketball ever you're thinking of football" and now you've moved the goalposts to a very specific situation where half the circumstances really aren't relevant because a clear recent example in Uthoff takes 2 seconds and google to find.

Basketball transfers can be blocked. Porter Jr. didn't sign a LOI for a reason. Tilmon almost didn't sign a LOI for a reason. If signing a LOI was so irrelevant why is it high profile kids sometimes don't do it? Because they don't want to hinder their possible choices.

You can spend the next couple hours digging up the information if you want. I'm dealing with facts here not trying to play the "name one time" game like a child.

I could spill 10,000 words on this but I won't. It's this simple:

We fired his coach.

Bo Ryan restricted Jared Ulthoff from transferring in conference (which you previously said didn't happen). I'm not a basketball database but that was pretty high profile and clearly demonstrates basketball coaches can and will block a transfer if they decide to.

Of all examples....are you forgetting the fallout from that?

the uthoff situation is totally different. He actually set foot on campus. I'll throw a lifeline. KU pg Devonte Graham originally signed with Appalachian state. He wanted out. He went to prep school for a year instead of college and the coach got fired and the new coach released him. Had the old coach not gotten fired, you might have some supporting documentation, but Appalachian state got a lot of bad press for that too.

There is not a chance in hell we would restrict Tilmon unless we had ironclad proof that Mizzou tampered with him. And even then it is probably doubtful. Do we really want the first stories about our new HC to be about not letting a kid out of an LOI after a firing?

Agreed. And not only would you have to know that there was tampering, you would have to be willing to stand up and shout it in a Chinatown sort of way. "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore". Anything less would still bring the wrath of public perception down on your head.

We'll I figured I'd ask in the recruiting thread since you know it's recruiting news.

The thing is that the tweet was from two+ hours ago. I don't know if nobody is putting any stock into it or if it's because everyone is enamored with the coaching thread but it's odd that it was completely overlooked.

Let me get back to the part of this that I believe is most important instead of arguing hypotheticals..

"With all this being said I think it's interesting some people don't think Whitman has envisioned every one of these scenarios taking place. While I wouldn't have expected Whitman to make an announcement that he's going to retain one specific coach (hence big manning the not yet named coach) I think it's pretty obvious Walker is going to stay here and, at worst, get a pay raise out of other schools interest.

Josh Whitman sees Walker's value. He sees this class's value. Just like when it looked like John Groce was a sinking ship before the late run and Smith visited and Whitman/Walker spent the majority of the time with him.. Whitman already played out the best way to retain this class without pissing off a potential head coach and adding Smith. I don't think he's telling a potential h.c. replacement he has to keep Walker but i think it's being recommended extremely cordially."

Josh Whitman, from what I've heard, is absolutely going to do his best to keep Walker on the staff moving forward. He's not going to mandate it by any means but there's a reason Walker is the interim and Walker was around recruits when the ship was sinking. This situation is much different, feelings wise, than when Mike Thomas fired Weber and Jerrance Howard was given little consideration. There's no bad blood here.

You'll probably read some rumors here and there which will be wishful thinking of Missouri fans (which was previously wishful thinking of SLU fans) about poaching Walker but if we are willing to pay 5 million dollars for a head coach is there any doubt Whitman will get the money he needs to pay the assistants and keep this great class together? This is a foundation class you are going to win a lot of games with in the next 4 years with a good head coach.. Heck maybe a bad one. Furthermore who would you rather learn from.. C. Martin, Ford, or Bennett?

Whitman is a very bright man and he's been ten steps ahead of this since it looked like John Groce was going to miss the tournament.. We are going to get depantsed here. But I understand the general cynic nature of an illini fan having been left at the alter so many times.

OK, so the players are "student athletes". And they go to school for an "education". In that idealized world, the coach should not be THE determining factor because the "student" has chosen the best "scholastic" environment for them to prepare themselves for a vocation in the future. Alright, enough with the fantasy. Top programs are Quasi-Professional Basketball Development Leagues. If the coach is the only reason someone comes to a school, then the recruit has no real commitment to the school or the other players or anything else that a college or university represents. I want a top coach and top players for the Illini. But I would like to see more dedication to something larger than to which guy is cashing one of the biggest pay checks in the State University system.

Andrew Slater switched his cyrstal ball pick for Tilmon to Mizz

No way Tilmon leaves Illinois until after he finds out who the new coach is and if Walker is staying or not. Those answers will come in the next few weeks and I believe Illinois can block schools that he can go to like Missouri or other Big Ten schools. He should just stay at Illinois he has a bright future here!!
