The problem on his HS team is the same problem for Demonte and others that are tall - their team needs them to play off ball and inside since that's the maximum use of them for the team's benefit. Each of these teams has fast, little guys that can dribble and shoot decently. Jgood makes the most impact off ball at the high school and college level, period. He could work to transform/develop himself in other ways and playing time would be important eventually, but most important to jgood is to have the maximum impact at each level, regardless of position. JMO.

Goodwin did not play "off the ball and inside" because of his height. Matter of fact, there were 5/6 guys on his HS team that were taller than him, unlike in Damonte's case. Goodwin played inside because he was the strongest kid on his team by far.

NEIllini has laid out the perfect rebuttal in my opinion.on a side note, it has been a lot of fun watching this meltdown that we have created. I say relax because either way we will be ok because we are on an upswing!

Right.

Compare that to what he gets at SLU: runs the show, ball in his hands a ton, PG, virtually unlimited minutes. Even the most jaded Illini fans should see the appeal.

At Illinois there's going to be serious competition for playing time (35 mpg @ SLU vs 25 mpg at Illinois) and he won't be playing PG.

Think Goodwin is looking at his college stint as an audition for the NBA. Other aspects are secondary.

Don't post often, but when I see something a bit weird I do.

So someone please tell me why when a poster here suggests that a certain recruit could play some point guard when he arrives in Champaign they are ripped to shreds and said player will never be able to handle PG on the Div 1 level, but.................................

When someone posts Groce may lose a lock recruit because another team is promising him a path to the NBA by moving to PG, (which he doesn't play now), its all logical:confused:

It's perfectly logical. A recruit being able to do something in reality is different from a coach selling said recruit on doing something. If he believes that is his shot at the League and one coach promises that and another doesn't, that can be a large factor whether it is realistic or not.

I think you missed my point, which was more to do with what posters deem as realistic.

A large number of people here, look for the negative POV first. Reality really isn't like that.

Not saying most don't have a reason to look for the negative, but things are changing, even if JG goes to SLU because he thinks if he does he can be a NBA point guard (which is kind of a long shot at best).

Can somebody update me on the reason why the concern regarding Goodwin to SLU besides them hiring his AAU coach?

SLU fired there coach last year after going something like 10-21 in a non-power 6 conference. They hired a coach that was fired from his previous school.

In the past year heard JG was heading to MSU, then he was waiting for the Indiana offer. Then he might play football at Iowa. I still think he is coming to Illinois. There might be some noise made about SLU to give his coach Tate the appearance of major pull in the area.

I would like JG in an Illini uniform, of any Illinois prep of the last 16 years he has the most DWade in him. The development and drive he has shown the last 3 years makes me think he can be a college bb elite player. At the same time he plays a position in which we are pretty solid on and Groce has shown to recruit that position well.

It's been quite entertaining. But hey to each their own....melt down if you must.

Wow this board sure melts down quickly.

99% of us want Goodwin badly (the remainder being crazy).
95% of us (conservatively) felt Goodwin was Illini bound since Tilmon's commitment.
Stands to reason that there'd be an uproar when a poster presents very bad news.

The next week should offer up a measure of corroboration or refutation. Meanwhile, the emotion-laced posts will continue.

I retread that post. Without breaking the rules, Ford cannot be talking in person with Goodwin at events and, especially, at his house.

I also have it from a solid UI source that Groce is in constant contact with Goodwin. The idea that he has gone "dark" on UI coaches is just not true.

Great news, thanks. That portion of the OP's original post(s) is clearly baloney. But the key bit is, is Goodwin enamored with Ford's "give him the keys, play PG" parlay?

As I mentioned the other day, I think this board hasn't been that bad in terms of meltdowns (with a few obvious exceptions) compared to other boards.
As for the SLU thing, it's a real "thing". I can't go into detail as it was originally reported on a premium board but it was brought up and confirmed by Illini reporters on that board and on here on Thursday by a poster who at the very least has very strong ties to the Tilmon camp and probably the ESL/Belleville area as a whole. The poster who brought it up Friday night, who knows? When he started gilding the lily with 'details' I pretty much ignored him. Not to mention Henricksen warned weeks ago that the race for Goodwin was a lot closer than people thought.
But as with most recruiting news, everybody is free to believe what they want or what makes them feel good or bad, depending on their general life outlook. :)
I can understand why SLU might make sense depending on what Goodwin is looking for, but as I've also said, for all that's been reported, nobody has said we're out of it, so no need to go all gloom and doom. With or without JG we're setting up to a have a pretty good class on top of a solid class from last year.

As long as our true insider Lefty says he's still coming, I have nothing to worry about. He's been on the money every single time.:hail:

Could the selfish comment come from JGood breaking from his Mom's preference?

Bomb Squad's Mom comment was about Nojel Eastern. The only thing I've ever read about JG's mom is that she wasn't very happy about all the arrests that went down last spring.

ps - wonder how many times Groce will be congratulated for 58?:)

Just to be clear, the original poster didn't say anything about being a PG. That was all on this board (and maybe premium sites? Not sure...).

He did say something about being the king of St. Louis but this whole PG thing did not come from ILLOB.

Although, I don't doubt Ford is selling Goodwin on some sort of Marcus Smart PG theory that he probably uses on any recruit that doesn't have the measurable for a different position in the NBA.

I just heard the whooshing sound of that comment/reference going over my head. Care to explain??

ILLOB was pretty late to the party. If you want to read the genesis of the meltdown or whatever one might refer to it as on this board, you need to start with stuemke5's post #2310. He's got a very good history from Tilmon's recruitment.
