Has the meltdown subsided ?? Is it safe to come back and read actual recruiting news ?? JSmith is a long shot IMO but so was JCL until he committed . Love the ebb and flow of recruiting !!

So much of this is the perception of a recruitment:

- JCL is an Indiana kid with offers to stay in state and play for ND or IU, we didn't feel good.
- Tilmon didn't commit when many thought he would, big programs came in, we didn't feel good.
- Smith hasn't been all that warm toward Illinois even though his parents went here, hasn't set up a visit, we don't feel good.
- Goodwin hasn't committed even though his buddies have, SLU hires one of his coaches, we don't feel good.

The point is that relationships play a huge role in recruiting and we don't really know anything about those relationships, other than fairly canned reports: "I've got a real good relationship with ________." Perception can be reality, but it's mostly speculation.

I wonder if this will change some with Michigan and Stanford recently getting SF commits?!
Interesting to me:
- IU already over their cap by one for 2017
- Xavier seems to have their guys at SG and SF for 2017, especially if they happened to get Scruggs.
- I don't know what Villanova's situation is...

Smith is at least a Plan B for 'Nova.

Villanova seemingly has all the advantages in its recruitment of five-star wing Lonnie Walker. The biggest one: Walker (No. 14 in ESPN 100) is from Reading, Pa., about an hour from the Wildcats’ campus.

Walker is a beast too, could be a one and done. Certainly seems like we need a lot of dominoes to fall in our favor with Smith, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

So Paul Scruggs leaves Indiana and Xavier without committing...

August 12-13 - Michigan State
August 26-28 - UConn
September 2-4 - Illinois

According to a poster last night, the MSU visit has been cancelled and that's a long way to the UConn visit. I still think Scruggs to Xavier.

Interesting that if Scruggs makes it to Champaign it will be the opener for football. Would be a very different atmosphere on a game day than over the summer on his other visits. Can't hurt.

Wouldn't be surprising to see a visit date moved up for the remaining schools if Scruggs truly is "open"

Scruggs played FB @ Southport this last few years. He's stated he's a big FB fan.

Joel Goodson

ties will be resolved
Speaking of FB, Goodwin is the 10th rated WR in the state, maybe Lovie could sit down with him at OPH. . .
http://lemmingprepinsider.com/2017-top-25-wr/

He's rated ahead of a kid committed to NW, maybe a dual sport scholarship, however that works, might do the trick. :)

Can you imagine the howling if we landed Goodwin on a football scholarship? That would be epic! A guy can dream, right?

I want a PG, big, and a wing. I'm okay if we get a recruit by process of elimination (the other schools getting commitments at a particular position).

It's not that Smith hasn't been warm, it's that AS OF MAY, word from the Smith camp was that there was no reason to consider Illinois. Take that for what it's worth, but that was told to me by the Smith camp. Keep in mind, we'd come off a disappointing season and then had the legal issues...some of the same discipline issues that turned off the Brunsons. This isn't 'perception' - this is based on info from the Smith camp.

Now, things have changed over the summer in that somehow, Groce and co are putting together a very nice 2017 class that would add appeal to playing for Illinois. My guess is that with school starting in a week, we will start hearing more (at least I know I will).

Yes, recruiting is fluid and you never know what's going to happen, but Groce and co really had to change some perceptions the last few months if the Smiths are even going to consider us seriously.

I wouldn't blame J-Good for making the "selfish decision" and committing to SLU if he believes that playing PG there or just being The Man there is his best chance at playing in the NBA.

For those of you suggesting that J-Good won't be able to play in the NBA b/c of his measurables or lack of shooting, you might be off the mark. Sure, J-Good probably won't start in the NBA, but he could have a long career and help a lot of teams win with his tenacity and jack of all trades style of play. Most teams play 10-11 guys per night.

Although I agree that JGood's best route to the NBA is via the point/lead guard spot, I'm not sure I buy into the argument that SLU would be the best option for him in this scenario.

I know that people point out Damian Lilliard as an example of going small, but the reality is that he's an extremely rare case. It's just not that common over these past 10 years for a non-P5 college guard to be drafted. For instance, over the past 10 years, the A10 has had 9 players drafted, two of whom were guards (Eric Maynor, Steph Curry both in 2009). By comparison, the B1G had 56 players drafted during this same time span, 15 of whom were guards. Others - CUSA (12 drafted, 2 guards), MVC (2 drafted, 0 guards taken including Fred Van Vleet).

Bottom line, the statistics just don't support going to a non-P5 school if the goal is to get drafted. And if JGood thinks he can work hard enough to be enough of a bad-!!! to get drafted from SLU, then I'm sure that same effort would get him plenty of tick at the lead guard for UI. Plus the exposure at a B1G school along with the level of competition is just so much more than at a non-P5 one, which I think is big for teams to project value and to determine draftability.
