The morale of this all (if it goes down as is trending) is that Illinois got outgunned by SLU. Think about that for a second. A school that graduates little over 10K+ students a year and considerably less alumni just outgunned a B1G institution with 50+ students a year and a multi-billion dollar endowment. Our booster network is a big work in progress, but in Whitman I trust.

Its hard to pass up dollars if your pro future is uncertain....T Boone Pickens used to greet prospective recruits with a $1000 bill taped to his forehead wearing a cocktail waitresses !!! as a hat....who was his BB Coach?...o yeah..Ford..Im shocked, shocked I say to hear that there might be $$$$ involved

Im not against any of this but I see the reason we didnt wade in too deep for a Goodwin....glta

Did we really get "outgunned" or did we just choose not to play that game? I'm not saying Groce runs a completely clean program because I have no clue. But if I were to push the limits of recruiting, or just flat out cheat, it wouldn't be for a top 60 wing. Not worth it at all.

If we're not playing that game then we're pretty dumb about the recruits we're going after (Cliff, Evans, Thomas, etc).

Nailed it. A borderline top 50 recruit isn't going to get the boosters to open up.

On the other hand, Tilmon is the type of recruit you 'play the game' for.

You're not sitting at the table with the likes of UNC or Kansas by playing the "right" way

I hope Jordan Goodwin comes here, but if he doesn't, good luck to him, and let's move on to the next one.

Having only ever seen Goodwin in highlights, he never really looked so much better than many other guys I've seen online in highlights. That's kind of the nature of highlights. But I put faith in all of the experts (on and off this board) who loved him. By the same token, I've wondered (and asked) whether he will be significantly better than Sergio was, and I've seen others express concerns about a 6’3” kid who seems to have the skills and temperament of a good-passing small forward. So with all of that, it's not too difficult to convince myself that we really need a legitimate big, and a point guard more.

So, okay, if we don't get Goodwin, we're still in a good upswing, recruiting wise, and we have a lot more good irons in the fire. Let's reel them in.

Joel Goodson

ties will be resolved
Goodwin would've had stiff competition for playing time. Had to beat out junior DJW, soph Kipper and junior AJ. Not inconceivable that he would've seen spot or limited minutes his first two years. Not saying I wouldn't want him, but this is hardly a death blow.

I'm not denying the rumors, nor am I denying this recruitment has taken a strange twist--but goodness gracious people...let more concrete sources come forward before chalking this one up. It's these situations/timing where crystal ball picks have some validity and Jerry Meyer has yet to change his pick. By all means, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like Meyer has got to be in the know as well as anyone with Goodwin and he hasn't flipped. For all we know this could be a long way from being over.

I agree with everything you say, including your comparison of Goodwin to Sergio. It was the Sergio-type determination that made me want Goodwin, not his skill set. In all honesty, if was looking for a wing who could play point guard, I would choose Eastern any day of the week. Indeed, whether or not Goodwin winds up at Illinois, I am willing to bet that Eastern, wherever he winds up, has the better college career.

I know all this smoke is bad, but I'm not giving up until Goodman gives a verbal (and we know that even that isn't officially official).

If nothing else, know that the Billikins are taking field trips to this thread and enjoying the meltdown. Cool it, brothers.

Now we have to worry about losing Goodman too? ;)

Just staying positive. It ain't over until it's over.

Tilmon is still 100% Illinois bound according to Piper. He's committed and living up to his pledge. He'll be joining DaMonte and Javon, and those are two good ball players. Maybe even more like Frazier and Kiir will come along. Time will tell.

I also think regarding Goodwin's decision, this will have an effect on the 2018 class, especially a wing like Tim Finke. If Goodwin goes to SLU, I think the PT on the wing increases. I don't know what the majority of this board thinks, but I would love to see Tim come here. I saw him play in Taylorville, and he has great potential.

Nowhere to go but up

So Goodwin may not come. NO way of knowing (a) if thats true (b) what it would have meant if he did come. A batman flapped its wings down in Sau Paulo and we somehow blew that lead against Michigan...who knows who we'll get instead and how it will fit. It seems like there are still plenty of other good kids on the radar, and there literally is nowehere to go but up, so thats the direction I'm a-lookin.

All you recruit jockeys and the"I wants" and "I needs" and "Gimmee this and gimme that", and "I think theres a 60% chance so and so comes"...yeah. The kids are either gonna come or not and all your wishing, fetishizing and faux forecasting, your lauding, mooning, and subsequent scorning like a spurned thirteen year old girl...it means zippy. Get a grip y'all. Theres still good players out there with us on their list. Lets just think the good thoughts and shut the heck up for a few minutes.

PS: TILMON IS COMING. Write that on a pacifier and try to suck on it for awhile. Its quite soothing.

I hate that Groce put in so much work, just to get button hooked by some questionable circumstances... But other than that part of it, we're missing out on a 4-star at our deepest position. Get him? Great. Don't get him? Get Kiir and Frazier and celebrate our best class in a decade.

You ever catch a foul ball at a game and feel excited for a second before realizing how much happier it would make the 10-year-old kid? That's how I'd feel for SLU fans. Good for you guys... That's a pretty big deal for you.

Billikens, whatever they are, must be thick skinned. Surely they are accepting of their meager fate (in sports and in life).

Per the SLU website (not sure about the thick skinned part):

The Billiken is a mythical good-luck figure who represents "things as they ought to be."

Before he was Saint Louis University's mascot, he was a national sensation, a figure who was turned into dolls, marshmallow candies, metal banks, hatpins, pickle forks, belt buckles, auto hood ornaments, salt and pepper shakers, bottles and more.

To buy a Billiken gives the purchaser luck, but to have one given to you is better luck.

It's funny you should say that.

I saw a few Tar Heels after Tilmon's verbal that essentially said the same thing about Illini fans.
