Probably not breaking news or anything but it's basically down to Kansas and illinois for Timon. I was finally able to talk to my st Louis connet, yesterday at a 4th of July celebration. Illinois is considered the favorite. Take it for what it's worth. Happy 4th!

No UNC? I had heard they were making a very good impression on him. Tilmon liked Coach WILLIAMS a lot.

Preview, schedule and pools for Peach Jam, which starts tomorrow in Augusta. Best feature is the online magazine which features 2 page in-depth looks at teams and players involved and their spring season history. Eagles, Meanstreets, Howard Pulley, Indy Speice and MOKAN made it with players we're involved with. (Probably others that I don't remember offhand.)

On page 23 of the magazine they say that Tilmon will be playing for the Eagles at PJ. Had thought he was out for the spring/summer.

I hadn't heard Tilmon was coming back for Peach Jam. That should be interesting. Maybe he and Goodwin can talk about playing together at UI.

Not down here, surely you jest. Every time I go to the back (Gator) gym in the Greensboro Spears YMCA, I get to look at the NC Gators AAU National championship banners flying in the gym, the one from ~ 2000 or 2001 reads like the UNC 2005 basketball team, but has a few other Wake Forrest/local college stars added for good measure. One of the big shots of NC Gator basketball was Stan Kowalewski a hedge fund adviser now serving 18 years in prison for stealing hedge fund money & giving it away to personal priorities like vacation homes, family & friends ( & just maybe basketball), also coach of a 2009 Northern Guilford High School team that had to vacate a state title in 2009, and briefly coached Oak Ridge Military Academy, which was on the verge of bankruptcy when he promised them a million or so dollars to upgrade there facilities and keep them afloat. Oak Ridge MA managed to go from barely a basketball program to a handful of major prospects overnight. Of course then the hedge fund deal exploded & I'm not sure if they still even play basketball at ORMA.

Here's some real reading-too-much-into-things nonsense: just glanced at Jordan Goodwin's twitter while looking for Peach Jam info and he's not a fan of Kevin Durant's decision to bolt OKC for Golden State. Called him soft in two posts. Maybe he's a kid who really values loyalty and wants to build something. Also, he's in love with Selena Gomez. Somebody should get her in an Illini jersey dress.

In other news, Piper said a few days ago on Tay and J that we're trying to get Trent Frazier on campus for an official in early August. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him commit next. Here's a new video for those who want to scope his game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SklxKqUhzXE

With his quickness and outside shot, he could be a great fit in the ball screen offense.

I think he'd be very solid but that competition looked a bit weak imo. Is he playing in any of the upcoming premier AAU tourneys? Would like to see how he plays against some other top PGs, if that quickness stays or diminishes comparatively.

Frazier will find ways to hurt you regardless. As a plus athlete with his game, he'll make you pay running floor or getting to his spots to knock down 3's. Kid is really good in transition. I'd love to see Frazier, Tejon and Goodwin run the floor together. That would be something.

On a side note -- forgive me if this was mentioned already, but the last day of Camp Curry Team Camp Wellington played St. Andrews. Frazier went up against Anthony Polite who is a much bigger/stronger guard ranked 200ish nationally. Had himself a dandy of a game. Polite got his, but Frazier dropped 50. I have no clue what the rest of the competition is like, but Frazier went off! He can fill it up

Frazier is a bit of a mystery. He's got some obvious next-level attributes: long, bouncy, crafty around the rim, nice shooter, gifted scorer, can play on or off the ball. However, he hasn't played much big time AAU ball - he broke out last summer, but never played for a high-profile AAU squad before that. This year, he played on the circuit for something like one week, wasn't getting any PT and quit the team to play high school summer league tournaments (which he completely dominated).

He's the best player for one of the best high school teams in Florida. Averaged 22 ppg and I think 5 ast as a junior. He just dropped 50 at a team camp, which his high school won. He also averaged 27 and 6 at a recent camp. However, he hasn't done it at the EYBL level, so...hard to say what he looks like against top D1 talent. There might be an adjustment period at the B1G level.

All that said, Groce has made him a big priority for a reason. Even just from watching highlights you can see he's potentially deadly in a ball screen offense: if you go under the screen, he has a quick release and can hit from anywhere, but if you try to go over the screen, he's quick enough to blow by you and draw help in the paint. If you surround him with plus shooters and passers, you'll end up with tons of high-efficiency shots. It's exactly what Groce's offense has lacked since he had D.J. Cooper at Ohio.

I'm starting to feel like our recruiting is going to turn out like this: Frazier commits in August, Tilmon in September/October, Goodwin before the high school season, and then either Justin Smith or we hold out for a spring commitment from a five-star long shot or (failing that) hit the 5th year transfer market and leave a 2018 spot open for Tim Finke.

Seems Frazier made a big jump. What was his rank before?

I would be quite happy with that. There have been higher rated classes than this in the past, but it would address all positions and really supplement what is already on the team. There sophomore year could be quite special, with the other parts.

Stating the obvious, but if Groce sees something in a kid, that's good enough for me. He has the knack for ID-ing kids that can play (not suggesting he's the only one). Groce has been on Frazier for a long time. I think Frazier will be a very good get (unless Groce lands Scruggs, which would be phenomenal).
